Richard's Story

Grew up in Miami FL, Marion/Hickory, NC and Auburn Indiana (what a welcoming place was Auburn).. Barely graduating Auburn HS in 57 ( thought it would never end) I took an AAS from DeVry Tech in Chicago in 59. Boy did I pay for that short attention span in HS. Did 3 great yrs as an Army Guided Missile Instructor at Ft. Monmouth NJ & Redstone Arsenal AL (best job I ever had), learned things about excellence ,professionalism, and yes, "injustice" that stayed with me all these yrs. All I had to do to keep this great job was reenlist. Given enlisted service realities a no brainer. I moved on to Sperry Gyroscope Co. out of Long Island NY, again as a guided missile systems instructor. Great experience. Left after 3 yrs. (lots of people with my general job description and the only way to distinguish yourself was to excel, blunder or get killed ). Barely managed to avoid any combination of the 3. Hell, I'm not real sure anybody knew I was there. Moved on to Harris Corp in Brooklyn NY for 7 yrs as Serv Mgr. Hard work, got noticed, hit stride, learned plenty. Changed career fields to medical electronics at J&J in Cleveland and Denver as VP Serv. Gave it 10 years, got a lot done, traveled the globe, got vested ,had a decade long running fight with every dept. in the company who would leave the field engineers to make good on "God knows what". . Worked with mostly great folks in a great company .The company and I evolved in different directions. Got out before they showed me out. Moved on...Expand for more
to Dornier Medical Systems/Daimler Benz in Atlanta as VP Serv & Operations. Gave it 10 yrs, got a lot done, traveled the globe, got vested again, had running fight, etc. etc. Sound familiar? Anyway, I had to retire when they couldn't accept my view of the future. I live with trophy wife Chris (the only thing I'll take for her is a bullet) in Eustis FL. I get older, she gets more beautiful . Dang. I have 2 red heads from a previous union. Ken in Cleveland plus Kathy and step daughter Jody who live nearby each with with a house full of crude furniture made by himself (well I did try and it's OK given my limited supply of patience and they willingly took the stuff). They all turned out well, good Republicans, nice people and self supporting. Grand dog Winston spends a lot of time with us. He is politically unaffiliated. I just closed out a 40 year love/hate relationship with Jaguar automobiles. E type, XJ12. XJ6C, XJ6, XJS, XJR and most recently an XK. Now have a Chrysler 300C. So many beautiful cars so little time. Dang. I listen to a little blue grass and less talk radio. We've taken a few cruses, traveled around the country with the grand kids and so on. We will probably keep doing this till we can't keep doing this. It's now 4 score years since we all started out together. A number of you, alive and not so much, have touched me personally. Our collective voice is now a murmur and soon to be an echo. I hold you in my heart. Well most of ya anyway. Hell of a party. RBC
