Richard's Story

Life After high school, I spent nearly 38 years working in the automotive industry as a service technician. Over the years I worked in dealerships carrying Pontiac, GMC light trucks, Ford cars and light trucks, Subaru (1969 360 & 1970 FF1), Mazda, Kaiser Jeep, AMC (including AMC-Jeep), Renault, Acura and Toyota. I retired on March 15, 2000. I bought a house in 1975 and never had much time to keep it up during my working years, so now I'm enjoying taking life a bit easier while I do some fix-up around home. There's plenty to keep me busy here for a long time to come... One of my main interests the last few years has been computing. I am about ready to do some hardware upgrades on my old computer, and nearly have all the parts to build a second one. I plan to network the two computers when I get everything up and running. I also have a notebook computer which comes in handy when I'm away from home, as well as a Palm IIIe ("Personal Digital Assistant") which is great for keeping track of things to do, appointments, making quick notes, etc. It will link up with my computer so I can synchronize files between the computer and Palm. College In September of 1965 I started college (trade school) at the Automotive, Machine Shop and Welding Division of Multnomah College in Portland, Oregon. I studied auto mechanics, which included a brief course in machine shop practice as well as welding (arc and oxy-acetylene). The first year was classroom work and the second year was practical experience in the shop, working on customers' vehicles. It was a good course, despite much obsolete classroom and shop equipment, and prepared me well for my tra...Expand for more
de in automobile repair and service. I graduated on March 30, 1967, and started work for Meadows Pontiac the following day. Workplace After high school I worked for Little Shell Service in The Dalles until starting college (trade school) in the fall of 1965. During the last two years of this time the station was Hawthorne Shell Service. During most of my college days (Multnomah College - Automotive Division) I worked as a janitor for the college. After college I started work on March 31, 1967, for Meadows Pontiac in Portland, Oregon, doing pre-delivery service on new cars, plus accessory installations and minor repairs. In late 1969 that dealership became Bud Meadows Ford, then in 1979 it changed hands and became Rancho Ford. During the Ford years I specialized in electrical diagnosis and repair, HVAC, leaks & squeaks as well as being the shop specialist on Ford Courier pickups, Pintos, Fiestas and Imports. The dealership closed on June 1, 1981 and I went to work a week later at Mike Salta Pontiac-GMC & AMC-Jeep-Renault in Portland. I was primarily a Renault specialist, but did repair and service on the other car lines as well. That dealership was bought out by Ron Tonkin in 1984 and I moved to Breslin and Wallace AMC-Jeep-Renault which a year later added Pontiac and GMC to its car & truck lines. I left Breslin and Wallace in March 1986 to work for Ron Tonkin Acura, a brand-new dealership in Beaverton, Oregon and stayed there until late in 1995. My final job, from December 1995 to March 15, 1999, was as a used car service technician for Thomason Toyota in Milwaukie, Oregon. Since then I have been retired and fully enjoying it!
