Richard's Story
Military
I delay enlisted in the United States Navy back in 1978 and reported to Boot Camp in Florida in October of that year. I had qualified for Nuclear Power School and the school was located at the same base so I enjoyed my 12 weeks of boot camp and then changed my mind after discovering a love for computers and the Poseidon and Trident Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile Program. I graduated and took about a week back home and then reported to Submarine Base, New London, Connecticut. I loved every aspect of submarine history and the mechanics of the equipment used aboard our Nuclear Submarines. After Sub school (oh yeah, I graduated) I went off to another year of school in beautiful Dam Neck, Virginia. A mile south of Virginia Beach. Advanced Electronics School and then on to Poseidon "C" School. After graduating as a Missile Engineer, I was sent to the USS Nathanael Greene SSBN 636. Unfortunately, she was in New Port News Shipyard in a 100,000 pieces and I really was depressed that i couldn't qualify on her and get my Dolphins as soon as I thought. mouth. My Weapons Officer sent me with a buddy of mine to assist the Missile Crew on the USS Kamehameha SSBN 642 Gold. Charleston , South Carolina in the middle of July. The experience was excellent and we sweated and toiled our way through a extended backfit and torpex execise with the gold crew. Thought we would get to travel down to CoCo Beach for a DASO but orders caught up to us and we came back to the Nat Greene and some more new faces. DASO followed 8 months later and I headed as one of he Blue Crew for Holy Loch, Scotland and Squadron 14. I became a 2nd class Petty Officer the end of 1991 and got my Dolphins my 1st patrol out in April of 1992. Proudest day of my life as any other submariner will admit. Made 4 deterent patrols on the Uss Nathanael greene SSBN 636 Blue and on my last patrol had a severe accident which forced my eventual limitred duty and no longer able to make patrols. I served with ComSubGruII as CMAA and left the service in August of 1985. I would have made it a career, but fate had other ideas for me. take a look at my college biography.
