Richard Gates:

CLASS OF 1972
Ferndale, WA

Richard's Story

I graduated from WWU in 1976 and worked at WWU and Whatcom Community College before moving to Edmonds in 1982 to work at Edmonds Community College. In 1986, I moved to Boston where I have been ever since. About half of my career has been in higher education; the other half, in the business world in the areas of customer service and human resources. In 2005, I transitioned back into higher education and have worked at Bunker Hill Community College, Northeastern University, Boston University, and currently I am the Student Services Manager for the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at Simmons College. d 2007 !!) My job is about a 15 minute walk to work which is a fantastic commute for someone living in a large city. I'm close to several convenient subway lines and live just blocks away from Northeastern University, the Museum of Fine Arts, the YMCA,and Symphony Hall...everything I really need. I do have a car and enjoy driving to Cape Cod or the beaches in Maine during the summer. Boston is very close by plane to DC, NYC, Montreal - and not so far from Florida and Puerto Rico, when I need sun & surf! Living in a big city has lots of advantages and disadvantages - you always need to be alert and street-smart. Overall, it's been a good experience for me, but I certainly appreciate the small-town values and comforts of growing up in Ferndale.
