Richard's Story

In High School I wore funny clothes. I had long hair and wore high fashion clothes. They were the latest trend from New York and Los Angeles. I wore Saturday Night Fever outfits before they were in style in Wisconsin. I also had another style of dressing, it was wearing torn blue jeans and T-shirts with psychedelic patterns. I was in the principals office almost everyday. I smoked cigarettes and so-forth. Nicolet had its smoking lounge for seniors and the front lawn during lunch; oh my! What went on out there would make us, as parents today, have a panic attack. During the summers in High School I had a job working at a summer camp owned and administered by a Millwaukee religious diocese. The camp was located in Wautoma, Wisconsin and occupied about one hundred acres of wooded land and fronted about a thousand feet of lakefront. The lake and the woods were the setting for an experience that those who were there would remember all their lives. I worked there every summer from June to August. In the backdrop was the end of the sixties and beginning of the seventies. I experienced the life of an outdoorsman, participating in swimming, canoeing, sailboating, hiking, camping out under the stars. At night we sat around the campfire after eating food cooked over the flames of the fire. We would sing songs, play guitar and other musical instruments. rst time. I flew to Los Angeles four days after graduation. In California, I took to the beaches and learned to surf. The Pacific ocean in June was cold and the surf was really up. That month almost the whole month long, we had high waves, rip currents that would carry you fast and toss you around like a little branch in a big rapids. You would be tossed around in the water like you were doing somersaults. Getting an associates degree in business from Los Angeles Conmunity College in four years was difficult. It took that long for a two-year degree perhaps because of workijng full-time, owning a restaurant and performing accounting services to a couple of clients, having a new-born baby girl and a wife who was having difficulty adjusting to her first-time motherhood. But after the associates degree, there was the need to move to a new part of the country to raise our child in a decent place. Los Angeles was a well-known place for prostitutes and other kinds of vice. Another college degree; a bachelors in arts opened the path to crunching numbers and a bona-fide profession. Under the appearance of the professional lay a dark group of people with corrupted spirits. Parting of the ways was as likely as water cutting a new chanel through the stones and rocks on a mountainside during a flooding torrential rain. So now I am here today and I am looking to meet old friends and make new ones too. There's more to the story, but that will have to be another day.
