Richard's Story

Life From a very shy, scared, bullied, yet impish kid to a confident & successful adult. Life has been an incredible journey. Having traveled the world several times, accomplished things unthinkable as a child, I consider my self the luckiest man alive, indeed, in many cases throughout my life, just to be alive. Married to a beautiful, wonderful and successful Italian lady. My wife and our 6 wonderful children (4 girls, 2 boys) and 19 grandchildren are the treasures of my life. Transferred to San Leandro High School due to having been consistently bullied at San Lorenzo High School - thank you Mr. Tioli. Ultimately left high school prior to graduation (March 1960) to join the Navy - one of best things I ever did. It's where I learned to defend myself, both physically and verbally. Ten years in the Navy, then college, BA International Relations, MS Administration of Justice. Employment history, local Sheriff's Department, then Federal Service. Retired June 2006 - said I wouldn't, but, after so many years, it was just time to go. In retirement we have enjoyed our wonderful children and grandchildren - we are truly blessed and not ashamed to say it. My third love is flying. I have 3,000+ flying hours in small, medium & large aircraft. We also love cruising and so far have taken 8 with plans for more. We purchased a new 34' Class A Coach and have traveled throughout the U.S. on a number of trips, some with the grandchildren.- amazing! After a year into retirement I got bored. Started flying again, but, been there done that. I wanted something new, though I still fly. Long story how I learned & got licensed, but I began driving Tour Coaches - the real big ones. It's a kick. The company I work with has a number of retirees, such as law enforcement retirees, an attorney, retired fireman, in addition to the regular drivers that have been doing this for as long as 30 years. I only drive about five months out of the year, which affords us the opportunity of enjoying other benefits of retirement. Would've liked to continued skydiving (200+) but, reality set in after the third of seven back surgeries. My oldest son wanted to try it, so, as a graduation present, after an all day training program he had his first jump from 11,000 feet - no it was not a tandem jump, he actually had some free fall time, with a Jump Master in close proximity - actually he hung on 'til the chute began to deploy. Later I took my wife on "mystery day" (every hour of the day there is something new & a surprise) and, after some train...Expand for more
ing she did a tandem jump from 9,000 and loved it. We took pictures & video of her jump and played it for the children later that evening - they were not happy! The consensus was that they were accustom to me doing those crazy things (law enforcement, skydiving, scuba diving, aerobatics, etc.) but not Mom. Would like start scuba diving again - did a lot in the military. My oldest son received a gift of scuba lessons for his birthday. Our children are incredible people, all the "girls" have chosen to be homemakers in spite of their career goals ranging from Interior Designer, School Teacher and Administration at Intel Corporation. Each has chosen fine men for husbands - construction company owner, computer R & D for Intel Corporation, Comcast executive and HR Manager. All of them are wonderful fathers. The two boys, graduated from University of California, one following in Dad's footsteps, Law Enforcement, married a Flight Attendant & wonderful loving lady. The other graduated with degree in Exercise Science, though he chose another path and is now a successful business owner with many sub-businesses under his wing. He too married a wonderful and loving lady. We're blessed in that we have never had the difficulties with our children other parents seem to have had, I.e. drugs, alcohol, criminal behavior, etc.. We are very proud of all our children. Because of childhood experiences, making friends has never been my strong suit. Personally, I am not a terribly outgoing person, except within our immediate family or those I/we have known for many years. I tend to be serious & focused, not prone to small talk, preferring to discuss/debate in depth subject matter. Recently there was an inquiry regarding my shyness and being scared. Socially shy, yes, to some degree. My wife takes care of the social arena. Given her experience in upper management in the banking community, she is very intelligent, outgoing and versed in the nuances of social interaction. Professionally shy, never!! Professionally, I have been very aggressive, with many scars to prove it. Scared? No longer!! Who do I remember from High School? Some names that come to mind are: Bob Kyle, Maureen O'Connor (very kind), Kathy Edwards (very sweet), Mr. Hager, Mr. Levine, Mr. Tioli (very understanding), Mr. Mizel (compassionate & my future Junior College Counselor), Duane Blyseth, Joe Roswell, John Lacey, Donald Hartmen, "Skip" Wynham(?), Miss. Watson, Mr. Gallo, Mr. Redeker(?). There are faces I recall, but no names associated with them.
