Richard Leatherman:

CLASS OF 1956

Richard's Story

I enjoy reading, writing, moderate workouts (at home with weights), walking, watching a good movie, eating out, cruising Home Depot (yeah, I know, that¿s not exactly a lady magnet), travel to Costa Rica, and good conversation. I am retired from full-time university teaching. I now teach part-time, only one class a year. My new career for the past two years is full-time writing of professional books and teaching leadership and human resource management. I like the Little Saigon Restaurant, Strawberry Street Cafe, Baker's Crust, Azzurro's, or Peking for dinner with a partner. Starbucks for coffee and conversation is great. I like many different kinds of food. I like Caribbean and Central American food very much. I like rice and beans seasoned with cilantro, with my sausage and eggs! My favorite restaurant here in Richmond serves Jamaican food. I like the Jamaican food, but it is too hot (spicy) for me. I'm a big James Patterson, Bob Parker, or Preston/Child fan. I like sports movies, Friday Night Lights on TV. I have five children. Four of them are grown and one is a little girl. My oldest daughter lives in North Carolina, my oldest son lives in Australia, my youngest son lives in Texas, and an older daughter in Washington (the capital). My sweet daughter, Brandy, is 4 years old, and lives in Costa Rica. That is a very long story! I met a lady in Costa Rica about 5 years ago. I fell in love. I worked very hard to obtain a US fiancée visa for her. I brought her to the US. She stayed two weeks. She said she loved me. But, she did not like the climate. She did not like the people. She did not like the food. She was homesick and wanted to go back to Costa Rica. I told her if she left, the US government would not allow her to return for 7 years. She said she wanted to go back to her home in Costa Rica. I bought her airplane tickets. We did not marry. She went home. When she arrived in Costa Rica, she discovered she was pregnant. I purchased a small home in San Jose, Costa Rica for my daughter, Brandy Leatherman. I fixed the house up so that it would be safe. I could not live in Costa Rica, as I must work in Virginia to pay the bills. I do fly down 5 or 6 times a year to see my daughter. When my daughter is older, she can fly to Virginia. I obtained her US citizenship. She has a US passport with her little baby picture. She can come see her daddy! I am a smoker. I started when I was a stupid 13-year-old kid. I have tried to quite a number of times, but have not been successful. However, I don¿t drink, as I have seen the horrible damage that can be done by alcohol. I have been married twice. My first wife was an alcoholic, and eventually died from her drinking. My first wife ran up hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical bills, as she was in and out of almost every hospital in Richmond. She was an alcoholic manic/depressive, loved being off her Lithium, as she liked the manic state. It drove the family to distraction. It took...Expand for more
me many years to pay off her medical debts. I took care of my children while she was in the hospitals. I took care of my children when she was at home because she was drunk. She died. We were married when we were young and foolish. She wanted to get away from her alcoholic parents. I was impressed by her beauty (she was exceptionally lovely) and her family¿s position in society. I impressed easy in those old days. I now teach at police and fire departments. I teach their officers leadership. I am also working with a police captain to write a test to help police departments select better officers. I have written a number of professional books. Last year, I finished the third edition of two professional books. One is called The Training Trilogy. It is a book to teach teachers how to be good teachers. The other book is called Leadership Skills. The are both published by HRD Press I built a small business, International Training Consultants, Inc., for 25 years. Ten years ago, I gave the business to my youngest son and his wife. I applied to the University of Richmond for a job as a professor. I was very lucky and was given the job. Three years ago, I retired from the university. I started my own small business as an independent management consultant. I still teach. But, now I teach workshops at police and fire agencies. I love to teach. It was what I was always meant to do. I still teach part time for the University, usually one class a semester. At the university, I teach leadership and also teach teachers how to teach. My old business in now bankrupt. It is no longer operating. But, my new little business is doing very well. My parents died about four years ago. I sold the house I was living in. I bought my old family home where I lived when I was a teenager. I love this house. I feel at home here. It did feel a little funny when I spent my first night in my parent¿s bedroom. I was never allowed in my parent¿s bedroom when I was young. (-: I have spent money in trying to restore this old home. During the last 20 years of my parent¿s lives, they did not see all the things that needed to be done. Restoring this home is a work in progress, and there are still many things that need to be done. I like the Latin culture very much. I also appreciate Latin women. They are clear about their role in a relationship. They are not subservient to their men. They let their men make decisions about the things men are responsible for. But, they make decisions about what they understand is their meaning in life. This is the way my mother and father acted when I was growing up. They had a relationship very much like the Latin culture. My mother was a strong woman. But, she never tried to overpower her husband, my father. I am dyslexic. That means I cannot spell. I think it also makes learning another language very difficult for me. But, I continue to try and learn Spanish. Maybe by the time I am 100-years old, I will be able to speak Spanish. (-:
