Richard's Story
Met my wife, Ruth Harkey, from Hornersville, MO, at Ark. State U. Married 44+ years, one daughter, one granddaughter. Ruth got her MBE at Ole Miss, retired from Webster U. in St. Louis in 2010. She also designs, makes, and sells jewelry, and teaches jewelry making classes. For four of the past five summers she has gone to China to teach English and western customs at a university.
We previously lived in Germany for six years and in Italy for three.
We went back to Europe in 2007 (Athens, Rome, and Germany) and to Alaska in 2008. We attended the 50th anniversary reunion of my high school class in Oct. 2008, the only reunion I've ever attended.
I spent 26 years in the Air Force followed by time at Computer Sciences Corp. Finished as a Software Systems Manager (AF) and Quality Assurance guy (CSC).
I played baseball at Ark. St., baseball and football in the AF in Germany (5-6 years), football and softball in Italy (2-3 years), softball in San Angelo, TX (3 years), and baseball briefly for an Italian team, Inter Milan, which played for the European Cup in the Netherlands but came in second.
Played baseball in the dedication game for the first baseball field in Sweden, baseball in the 1960 Olympics soccer stadium in Rome, and football and softball inside a volcano (dead, ...Expand for more
supposedly) in Naples.
Played American football in six countries: West Germany and West Berlin, England, France, Spain, Italy, and Greece. My Rhein Main, Germany, football team won the Air Forces in Europe championship in 1967. My San Vito, Italy, football team won the Shrine Bowl in Naples in 1976.
I'm a bass fisherman and collect baseball memorabilia. My bassing goal is to catch the biggest bass I possibly can, take her picture, and let her go. Of course, whenever I catch the biggest bass I know there's a bigger one waiting for me the next day.
Collecting baseball cards, which started when I was 10 or 11 in Pine Bluff, AR, became pretty serious in the '80s and '90s and now is a small business. I sell baseball and other sports items at some of the biggest collectors' shows in the country and from my web site.
Would especially like to hear from anyone with time in the Air Force Security Service, Electronic Security Command, the Defense Language Institute, or from Pine Bluff. Google Richard Leech + Pine Bluff.
We live in Fairview Heights, IL, 15 miles east of downtown St. Louis.
(BTW, I don't really have a great interest in cats as a profile question might indicate. Ruth and I have a 21 year old cat who stayed with us when our daughter moved out.)
Good talking to you.
