Richard's Story
I initially joined Classmates.com as a way of communication with some of my classmates from 1965 before attending the 50th class reunion in Colorado next June. So here is my life in a nutshell:
After graduating from Widefield in 1965, I attended the University of Colorado, Boulder, for two years. I dropped out of CU, got married, and went into the U.S. Army for four years, where I was a hospital medic, stationed at Ft. Sam Houston, TX, and Fitzsimons Army Hospital in Denver. I also had two children, a girl and a boy.
After my discharge from the Army, I returned to the University of Colorado, Denver, where I received a B.A. degree in Biology and a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering. I then hired on with the Bureau of Reclamation in Denver. This was very interesting work as I was able to work on some massive civil engineering projects. During this 12-year period, I was divorced and remarried. I have been married to my second wife for 26 years now. I also earned an M.S. degree in civil engineering from UCD and continued my spare-time graduate studies at the Colorado School of Mines.

nish my Ph.D. at CSM, graduating in 1991. I then hired on as a tenure-track assistant professor in the mining engineering department at the University of Utah. Once I achieved tenure and promotion to associate professor, I decided to move to the Montana School of Mines, which is now affiliated with the University of Montana. Both at Utah and Montana I taught and published research in land reclamation, numerical modeling, and soil and rock mechanics. I was promoted to full professor in 2004.
I retired from the University of Montana in 2010. I now live outside of Helena, Montana in a house my wife and I built in 2003.
I hope to exchange some life experiences with a few of my high school classmates at the reunion next summer. One person I hope to meet is Joanna Smith, who attended the senior prom with me.
One other note: Richard Hays was my best friend throughout my grade school days through high school. Richard died in 1982 at the age of 35 from a perforated ulcer. I hope I can talk to someone else who knew Richard at the reunion. Richard was way smarter than me. He also played on the football team as a tackle.
