Richard's Story
Life
After I graduated from Calhi, I went to UC Berkeley for a year, didn't do so well, then transferred to UC Santa Barbara. I majored in Mechanical Engineering, and joined the new Crew team (rowing) at school. I met my first wife there too. After graduating in 1968, I went to Navy OCS and became an officer in the Navy, stationed at Long Beach Naval Shipyard. I missed the Viet Nam experience, unlike many classmates. After 2 years I was released from active duty and started an engineering career, first in shipbuilding then in the oilfield industry. I also got my MS degree in Engineering and am a licensed professional Mechanical Engineer. Along the way I had two great kids, Jeff and Jenni, who are now grown and on their own. After many years and travels, including 3 years living in London, I went through a difficult divorce, and have since remarried. I now live in Oklahoma City and work for an automotive filter manufacturer as Quality Supervisor. My son lives in Los Angeles, is single and a school teacher. My daughter is married and living with her husband in Germany, and just made me a grandfather for the 2nd time. I also have three stepchildren: Amanda, 26, single and working in a call center; Chase, 22, single, working for Sprint Wireless; and Rachel, 18, junior in H.S and Drum Major for the marching band next year. I would love to hear from any old friends from school.
Update: life has moved on. I have four grandchildren now from my daughter in Germany. I also have a step-grandchild on the way, from my wife's youngest, who is about to graduate from the University of Oklahoma. My son is still living in L.A., got married but is divorced again. I have changed jobs a couple more times, and am working in telecommunications now for a contractor for AT&T. I am an aspiring ficiton writer, so if you see my name on the best deller list, don't be surrpised!
Update: My stepdaughter Rachel had a beautiful girl, Layla, the most perfect baby in the world. She also graduated from OU with a BA in Art History. My own kids are doing fine. My 38 year old daughter/mother of four just ran a 31 K mini-marathon, and finished in the top 10 of all the women!
I often wonder what happened to all of my friends from high school. I went back to my ten year reunion, but it wasn't the same somehow. I saw some of the people I wanted to see, but many were missing.
I still remember Principal Arthur Hobson saying at the start of each year, ""These are the best four years of your life." Looking back, I sometimes think he may have been right.
UPDATE 07/23/10: I now have another grand-daughter from my stepson Chase and his wife Jennifer, Jordan Grace, whio is actually almost 18 months old now. I haev been fortunate to have some of the most beautiful, talented and smart grand kids ever! I will add some photos of them to show you what I mean. And another one os on the way - Chase and Jennifer will have Juliet in November of this year. That means I will have six grand-daughters and one grand-son. Yikes!
UPDATE 06/30/2016: I have been retired for a couple of years now, and celebrated my big 70th birthday just yesterday. I still remember many things from my high school days. I remember our Principal, Arthur T. Hobson, always told the freshmen every year, "This is the first year of the best four years of your life." In many ways I tend to agree. I have added many since then, but the memories, and friends, from those years remain close to my heart (some especi...Expand for more
ally so).
As for today, I have my own kids, Jeff & Jenni, who are in their 40's now, and living successful lives in Los Angeles and Germany respectively, including raising 4 wonderful and talented grand-children. I also have 3 great step-children, Amanda, Chase & Rachel, from my 2nd marriage, with four local and very adorable grand-daughters that I spoil every chance I get.
Life is good on the whole, but I find that as the years pile up, I tend to look backward more that forward on my timeline.
I have few regrets, mostly about missed opportunities. One in particular stands out from high school, but the person involved is no longer with us, so it's even more of a missed opportunity. Another slipped through my fingers, a fact I've never forgotten. The years give us a much better perspective on what is important. Sadly they don't allow us to go back and take advantage of the missed opportunities
Update 04-24-2018: Life goes on and is good for the most part. We have nine grandchildren now, eight girls and one boy. My oldest, Alanis, is graduating from high school in Germany. The youngest, Elaina, was born only last November, so there's quite a range. I continue with much work, responsibilities and service four our church, where I'n the Treasurer and an ordained Elder, among other things. I'm also working on my first romance novel, planned to be published later in 2018. I've made my peace with the Lord, so I'm ready when He is. But not just yet I hope. I have too much left I want to do, to write, to enjoy.
Update 09-23-2019: LIfe is much the same for me. I'm still working on editing my first novel, Return to Rainbow Ridge, which I hope to self-publish on Kindle by Christmas this year. My oldest grand-daughter, Alanis, begins law school in Germany soon. It's a five-year program that incluides a bachelor's degree. Other family things are about the same, including involvement in church activities. I'm trying to taper off that, since my writing is taking up so much time. I have an author website now, richardmcclellanwrites before the dot com, including a bi-weely blog.. I will not be attending the October 2019 reunion, too much going on here and we're saving up for another trip to Germany next year.
Update October 2020: Many things going on these days, too much that is unplanned and unexpected. Life is about change, but this years is getting ridiculous. Focus on the positives--that's what I try to do. If you had told me when I was in high school that some day I'd be a published romance novel author, I'd have laughed at that. But here I am, exactly that. My first book, RETURN TO RAINBOW RIDGE, was self-published in September on Amazon Kindle. I'm almost through the first draft of the next one, RULE NUMBER ONE, which I hope will be out early next year. Otherwise, I stay busy with church activities as Treasurer and member of the Board of Elders. We missed out on our trip to England and Germany this summer because of you-know-what, but we hope to reschedule for next summer. Life goes on--one way or another.
Update July 8, 2021: My second book, RULE NUMBER ONE, is done and released on Amazon Kindle. When I was a student at Calhi, if you'd have told me I'd be a published author—of romance novels, no less—in my mid-70's, I'd have considered that absolutely crazy. Yet, here I am, with two books published and the third well under way, called HIS KIND OF MUSIC, aiming for publication by the end of this year. My English teacher, Mrs. Hughes, would be proud.
