Richard's Story

Life Was a Letter Carrier and Clerk for USPS for nine years beginning in July the year we graduated. Spent two years in the Army as a draftee 67-69 (did not serve in Vietnam). Completed UMUC while working fulltime (BA Sociology 1977). Transferred to US Courts for 23 years as a Management Analyst, ret. Dec. 1997 with 23 years service there, and 32 years total. Worked 3 part-time jobs sequentially afterwards, and fully retired in 2006. Live in Greenbelt, MD within walking distance of where I lived during HS. Also served in US Army Reserves for 10 years, left as an SFC E7 IG NCO, 1980-90. Three children by two marriages, and helped raise four step-children by two other marriages, but this 4th marriage is the charm! :>) My wonderful wife of 25 yrs is Barbara. She was married previously to Ricky Barber of HPHS 65, who passed away in 1990 from diabetes, I have played piano and sung in various rock/country/soul groups since I was 15 -- still jamming but retired from an active group (The Relics) in Dec 2018. I do some DJing and DJ'd for our 50th Reunion, hope to do so for the next one. Now writing my own solo songs (about two-dozen so far) and have released a CD "It's Just Me," which is available on Amazon, Itunes, etc. (Find my website using Google. They won't let you post it here,) I also write articles from time-to-time for our local newspaper, mostly 'In Memorium' pieces for people I grew up with. Rode various motorcycles for 20 years until an accident (August 2009) in which I broke my collarbone and 9 ribs and fractured my scapula (shoulder blade). Fully recovered. Active member of Greenbelt Community Church (United Church of Christ) since childhood. Have volunteered in various capacities, longest with Capital Hospice after serving as the Volunteer Coordinator there.. I have already lost my brother and many friends to death (mostly auto accidents), and lost my son to diabetes in 2013, but feel fortunate to be here and enjoy life wit...Expand for more
h Barbara. Happy to be 74 - have been happy to be every age, but would have stayed 17 forever (even though that wasn't a particularly happy year, but liked the age.) Politics- Moderate, leaning Liberal. I try to combat prejudice in all of its forms. Support the troops heartily, just don't support sending them to undefined and unending missions. Much more concerned about personal rights than about terrorists - giving up freedoms indicates we already lost that fight. (Wasn't that their intent-to destroy our open and loving society. Seems to be working.) Terps!!! also Nats, Caps and, O's. Rick- (not Richard, please!) I was and am a Greenbelt boy, through and through. In HS I was working part-time and playing in my first rock-n-roll bands so I never had time for extra-curricular activities. We pretty much hated High Point (sorry to say) because of the way it was run. Chotiner was no fun! We skipped a lot. I was in some AP classes and did well scholastically. Friends were Leigh Dorsey, Artie Manual, Jay Coleman, Derrill Smith, Kibby Moore, Ricky Barber, Thomas Sharp, Ronnie Hall, as well as Barbara Branch, Linda Howie, Karene Herling, Janet Hieber and many others from Greenbelt. I got along pretty much with everybody, though, and was friendly with many of the guys and girls from Berwyn/CP, Hollywood and Beltsville like Cary Thomas, Doug Brooks, Bob Creel, Rich Reinoehl, Dave Snyder, Donna Dwiggins, etc. Played music after high school years with classmates Jesse Ayers, Dennis Monk (from Lawrence & the Arabians) and Ron Stroebel years back. College PG Coumminity College 1966-1972 Bowie State College 1972-73 University of Maryland, University College 1975-77 All but one year was nights and weekends, and nights, and nights, and more nights!!! Later earned a Masters Certificate in Project Management from George Washington University as part of my employment. Was selected as the Outstanding Citizen for year 2016 in the City of Greenbelt.
