RICH's Story

Living near Dover, Delaware -- after a lifetime in NJ, including 55 years in North Brunswick. Staying active playing pickleball, pool volleyball, etc., busy in various organizations, and LOVING LIFE! The 2 supposedly "dapper" photos are from events in our Spring Meadow active-adult community -- a Roaring Twenties show and a Kentucky Derby party. (Maryann likes crazy hats.) Since moving here in 2022, I've become a newsletter writer, civic affairs committee chairman and unofficial outdoor sports director. In my NBHS yearbook photo I had a crew cut, but most of the crew has abandoned ship! At 21 I was America's youngest newspaper editor (I have a degree in journalism from Rutgers/New Brunswick). Then went into advertising and PR for 2 decades, moving up from copywriter at the Boy Scouts HQ in North Brunswick to corporate manager in NYC. Next I had my own Central NJ ad agency for over a decade. I married too young and, after having 2 great kids, divorced 10 years later. Ironically as an NBHS alumnus, I was elected to the North Brunswick Board of Education and helped break away from NBHS when the township opened its own HS. I was active on many civic committees and president of the Maple Meade Estates Community Club and (when I lived in Monroe) president of the Forsgate Community Assn. I was also a landlord with rental properties in New Brunswick and Franklin/Somerset. I didn't even know her in NBHS, but at 32 I married Sharon Baker ('61)...Expand for more
and helped raise her 2 great kids. We were married 29 years when, sadly, she passed away at age 62. After several years as a widower, I remarried at age 70 in 2014. Maryann is a retired nurse. We honeymooned in the British Isles and for a month in 2016 we drove all around the US. Combined we have 6 grandchildren coast-to-coast. I retired at 70 after 22 years as a Central NJ Realtor. Our first Toms River house was flooded by Superstorm Sandy. We restored it, and in 2018 we moved inland to the Lake Ridge active-adult community. There I was active in its clubs, committees, sports and newspaper, and became president of my third community. All of the above sounds like my pre-death obituary! : >) Our years at NBHS were awkward, insecure teenage times for many of us. However, like fine wine, we improved with age, didn't we? : >) We've "come a long way, baby"... through America's civil rights movement, Vietnam and other wars, moon landings, women's liberation, environmental awareness, self-awareness, booms and busts, careers, kids, computers, cell phones and so much more that we couldn't even imagine when we were young and innocent at NBHS. What an era to be alive! Those experiences have made us who we are today. Thanks for reminiscing with me. If you want to reach me: The 2-letter abbreviation for the Garden State, period, my 4-letter shortened name, at the famous "Y" website. Be well, be happy, and (most important) stay alive! -- Rich
