Richard's Story

Life Richard L. (Dick) Winslow Because Scarsdale HS was bedrock during a number of my formative years, these reflections are inextricably associated with what I consider to have been a very special time in an extraordinarily unique venue. A half-century has passed and while we have made great progress in most technical areas, I feel we have lost some of the simplicity and innocence of those early Post War years. With that said, those years were a memorable time. As students, our instructors motivated us to achieve our best and among our peers this striving for excellence was further encouraged. My primary career has been broadcasting, both from an engineering and commercial aspect. I successfully built a coast-to-coast group of 14 local radio stations from Long Island in the east to our westernmost facility in Pasadena. I also maintained my activity on the performance end and was a weekend news anchor on channel 11, in NYC as well as a newsman on WHN when it was a “popular” music station. I am now semi-retired from the broadcast industry and yet attempt to remain active in it when possible. I host and produce a weekly “Magazine” show on East End Cable Systems, a division of Cablevision; I also continue to do voice-overs and commercial announcements. Years earlier, I had another goal; that of flying. Upon visiting Macy’s at Herald Square soon after the War, I was impressed with an early offering of the Piper Aircraft Company; it was a futuristic display, touting ways the majority of the U.S. population might travel during the second half of the 20th Century! That fantasy never materialized. Nevertheless, America was built on dreams. It was visionary and I was duly impressed, A little fabric covered “Cub” with no “frills and extras” (A quote from the old Bob Newhart “The Mrs. Grace L. Ferguson Airline and Storm Door Company”) such as (avionics) radios, no flaps, and no retractable gear! Onboard transponders, CAT 3 landings, LCD readouts an...Expand for more
d GPS were not then a part of the configuration or in many cases not even in one’s imagination. I started building and flying control wire glo-plug powered model planes before age 12 and became hooked. By the time I had reached a “mature” 18, I was piloting single engine planes and over the next 20 years flew everything from Beech 18s, DC3s and “Connies,” to the ultimate piston plane, the DC7 C Long-range, nicknamed The Seven Seas. I had logged enough hours to achieve a multi-engine rating along with my ATP license. (Now finally, I could fly cargo and people!) That “second career” took me worldwide and peaked during the late ‘70s into the mid ‘80s when I earned the rank of Captain flying Boeing 707 jets with a Mid East carrier. I journeyed worldwide, and when I didn’t fly as a command pilot, I traveled at little or no cost in my quest to view the world. This argosy took me to more than 100 countries on all continents. I decided I still liked the Northeast of the good ole US of A; it was home - - - the best. Chuck Berry’s wonderful rocker, “Back in the USA” still makes me smile and feel good too. I found time (and it took many years) to achieve my Ph.D. in the field of Radio Frequency science. Some of my efforts laid the groundwork for the communications technologies that today are incorporated in what is known as the “cell phone” system. Several of our radio towers were used to do propagation studies to determine how and where to build the “cells,” those areas where a portable low-power transmitter/receiver (transceiver) could “talk” to a relay point which would then send that signal on to others and ultimately to another “phone” allowing two-way communications; something that now, 35 years later, is all but taken for granted. Today I manage a NY State Charitable Corporation; I enjoy helping people and this is one way I find where I can “give back.” We are self-funded and I manage our portfolio. I also do a great deal of volunteer work in my community.
