Rick's Story
Life
I bet most of you are surprised that
I'm on Classmates. In high school
think I came off as disaffected and
self-absorbed, and certainly too
cool to be a part of something like
this. However, in the years since
Glendale I've changed a whole lot.
After high school I began my roller
coaster with addiction. Addiction alone
is bad enough, but addiction is never
enough - I would do anything to pay for
my habit. There are accompanying evils
such as pushing, prostituting and
pandering, which I participated in
briefly, until a friend picked me up
one day and took me to a treatment
center. It took me about six months to
straighten my life out in Springfield,
and, against the
advice of my therapist, I decided that
a change of scenery would be the
final step in my recovery. So I packed
up and moved to San Francisco.
Not surprisingly, without my support
group, I ran into trouble...Expand for more
pretty
quickly, ran up against the law and
spent a SHORT time in jail.
Believe me,
though, it only takes a short time in a
federal penitentiary to figure
out
it's better to be a recovering addict
than an addict (although I was
told
federal time is easier than state
time). It's a struggle every day -
it's
easier to feed an addiction than to
fight one - but I didn't want to
cycle
in and out of a place like the Federal
Corrections Institute on Terminal
Island - and getting back into therapy
was the surest way to beat my
addiction. I joined a Christ-centered
12-step program in order to get
back
to that happy place in my heart where
I don't live to feed "the beast".
To that end, if I have ever harmed or
offended
you, even over a decade ago in high
school, please let me know and I'll
try
to make amends. I pray to go I
continue to have the strength to work
towards these lofty goals.
