Rick's Story

Life Hey, there! Shoot me a line and lets catch up. After graduating from high school, I attended ULM, graduating in 1994 in Health and Human Performance. Married Terri Gilstrap in September of 94. She's still putting up with me. We have 3 children, Jake Hamner (15), Erica (10), and Jessica (9). I've posted pictures of all of us on this website. I've moved around a lot coaching football at WM Jr, Ouachita Jr, West Ouachita, Bastrop, Terrell TX, and Neville. While at Neville I went back to school (Tech) to get my masters in Curriculum and Instruction. Kinda liked being back in school so I started on my doctorate in Ed Leadership last year. Still have 2 years before finishing. Needed to get some different career experiences outside of the football field so I traded my whistle for a suit and tie. Went to work for the LA Department of Education at the Region VIII Service Center as a School Improvement Coordinator. I worked primarily with low performing schools and districts providing professional development and updates that were put out by the Dept of Ed in Baton Rouge. It was enjoyable and challenging work. Went back into coaching for a couple of years at our alma mater before taking the position of Curriculum Coordinator. Similar to the position I had with the state department, I provide professional development to our teachers, conduct the GEE testing, and keep track of our school accountability activities. I enjoy it and will probably stick with this position until I complete the doctorate in May...then we'll see what doors open up. My family is my life. When I punch out I come straight home to spend time with them. Terri is a real estate agent with Century 21 and is doing well. Jake is a senior this year and is playing football. He doesn't enjoy hunting and fishing that much anymore, preferring instead to play video games, listen to music, and play his guitar. Erica and Jessica are both cheerleaders at Ouachita Jr...one in 7th and one in 8th grade. I'm sure that they will t...Expand for more
ry to stay with it in high school. They have an amazing grace about them. They are both very well-rounded young ladies. I'm still not sure how I had girls in the first place but I wouldn't consider trading them. I think that I got just what I needed. They have really grounded me. Erica is super smart and very competitive. Sometimes too competitive, to the point that you almost don't want to win and have to endure her mood change. She is headstrong, not letting me get away with anything. Jessica is more level-headed and goes out of her way to make sure that everyone is happy. She has a great sense of humor and loves to laugh. She is also a very good student, although she works harder at it than her siblings. She is amazingly creative and her talents are equally special but different than her brother and sister. She is a pleaser, willing to give you her last dime if she thought you needed it. While Erica is hard to love sometimes (she can be mean), Jessica is so easy to love. Terri and I thought of having other children but I didn't have the heart to make Jessica a middle child. She is the baby and that's how its supposed to be. Both the girls enjoy hunting and fising with me. Most days. If they think that they may miss a trip to the mall, its hard to compete, though. Both have caught fish that we have mounted on the walls and each were able to kill deer this year which we had made into soft-tanned rugs for them. I have a lot of pictures of them with various fish or animals. We have spent a lot of time outdoors. I try to make as many memories with them as possible because I know too well that these times will soon pass and they'll grow up and be less interested in hanging out with Dad. Man, I'm dreading having to deal with BOYS! It has been on my mind since they were born. A living torment. I guess there will be some Rick and Terri time again when all of that starts. Whew. That was a mouthfull. Ok. Your turn. Shoot me a line. I'm looking forward to hearing from you.---Rick
