Rick's Story
Life
Those of you that remember me probably remember me more from PBJH than from Mission Bay so I'll start from the begining.
After being thrown out of PBJH toward the end of my 9th grade year (1981) for being a general f*&%-up, I finished out 9th grade at marston middle school in clairemont. I then went to mission bay for the start of 10th grade. Unfortunately, I only lasted a couple of months before my enrollment was once again terminated. I went to Twain beach continuation for a couple of weeks before finally just dropping out altogether. At the time I thought that my schoolastic career was over but my parents managed to convice me to take the california proficiency exam when I was 16.
After a short career in construction I decided that work, especially hard work, sucked. Yes, I know it does not take a genius to figure that out but I was never very bright when I was young, some would say I'm still not. So, anyways, I started going to Mesa college at night and after a couple of semesters decided to go back full-time. After a couple years I transfered to UCSD where I earned my Bachelor's degree in Engineering. I even graduated with honors, which amazed even me.
After working as a tech geek, who woulda thought, for 5 or 6 years I decided it was time to do something different so I started going to grad school at night. After about 3 years of doing little besides working and going to school I earned my MBA. I'm glad I did it but I would never do it again!
In 2002 the Kearny Mesa based high tech company that I had worked at for 7 years was suddenly closed down by its corporate parent. Just as suddenly I found myself unemployed. This seemed like a good time to strike out on my own so I set up a consulting business and signed up several of the former customers of my former company.
In early 2004 I finished up all of the work that I had lined up and quit taking on new business. I proposed...Expand for more
to my girlfriend, now my wife, bought two around the world tickets and we took off to see the world. It is now 2005 and, after 14 months of travel, we have recently returned to San Diego and even more recently gotten married. We have both started working part time but niether of us wants to return to the world of 60 hour work weeks anytime soon.
Kids are definately in the near future, fortunately my wife is younger than me so it is not as urgent as it might otherwise be. For now I'm enjoying my freedom, surfing as much as possible and planning our next trip. We are thinking about moving to Costa Rica or Panama for a year or so but who knows at this point.
I'm always interested in hearing from people out of my past so, if our paths ever crossed drop me a message and let me know what you are up to.
Cheers
School
As I mentioned in my bio, school was not really my thing. I was much more interested in chasing girls, getting high and just generally getting into trouble. Not suprisingly I was much more successful at these things than I was in school. Somehow I managed to pass the proficiency exam. It must have been really easy since I only had what amounted to an eighth grade education at the time. I actually don't really remember since I was so stoned at the time.
College
After a healthy dose of reality caused me to wise up a bit. I decided that school was really not such a bad idea. I had to spend 3 years at Mesa JC to make up for my lack of high school. Then it was on to another 3 years at UCSD. The UCSD engineering program was challenging to say the least. About all I can remember are long nights in the computer lab and long nights in the library.
The SDSU MBA program was not really all that difficult and about all it taught me was that I prefer to be a tech geek.
I'm now about halfway through a master's degree in computer science going to SDSU partime when the mood strikes me.
