Rick's Story

After high school, I went to the University of Lowell. It took five years for me to figure out I wanted to be a Civil Engineer and graduated in the spring of 1980. I married Bonnie in August 1979. My senior year in college included semesters with 22 credits, working at an engineering firm one day a week, teaching swimming at the "Y" two nights a week, and teaching SCUBA on the weekends. (Can you spell NUTS?) Our oldest son was born in August of 1980, and I left a week later for California for training in the Navy Civil Engineer Corps. We spent the next two years at Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. Our daughter Lisa was born in August of 1982, just before we moved to Maine where I was stationed at Potsmouth Shipyard. After two more years, I was selected for graduate school and we were off again, this time to Texas A&M where I earned a Masters degree in Ocean Engineering. From there we went to Florida where I completed Navy Diving Officer training and again off to California. I was stationed at Travis Air Force Base (yes as a Naval Officer) for the next three and a half years where I was Contracting Officer for the construction of one of the largest Hyperbarice Chambers in the world. While we were in California, we were able to hop on a military flight to visit Ha...Expand for more
waii for a week. We also enjoyed backpacking and skiing in the Sierras and through Lassen National Park. In January of 1990 I left active duty and we returned to Billerica where we have been living in the house I grew up in ever since. I started working in the construction industry and have worked on several large projects in the area. Our yourngest son was born in October 1993. I continued serving in the reserves and retired from the Navy as a Commander after 22 years. I have seen 40 of our 50 states and have been to Germany, Iceland, Tunisia, and Senegal. I have been an active Scout Leader for nearly 24 years and have led the scouts on a 56 mile backpacking trip through Vermont and a 67 mile canoe trip on the Allagash River in Maine. Both our sons are Eagle Scouts. Jared married his high school sweetheart and is an electrician for Local 103. They have two beutiful boys, Jacob and Cole. Lisa is nearly complete with her pHD in Immunology and Molecular Pathogenesis at Emory University in Atlanta. She can't wait to come home. Brian just started Middlesex Community College in Business. He will be testing for his Second Degree Black Belt in Kenpo Karate and wants to open his own karate school. I keep waiting for life to slow down, but it doesn't seem to want to.
