Rick's Story
Life
I attended grade school in Iowa and junior high in Thayer, Missouri. My family moved to Willard, Missouri, at the end of my eighth-grade year. I enjoyed my four years as an active student at Willard High School. I was involved in many athletic, musical, student government and classroom activities and made some wonderful friends there.
It was my honor to serve as president of the 1969-1970 senior class and tri-captain of the varsity football team. I was also class Salutatorian. Outside of school I was an Eagle Scout with Willard¿s Boy Scout Troop 52.
After graduating from WHS, I attended Dartmouth College. I was a member of the freshman and junior varsity crew (rowing) teams and president of the Winter Carnival Council. I spent most of my sophomore year studying in Germany. I earned a bachelor¿s degree in Honors German. After teaching briefly at the high school level in New Canaan, CT, and Lugano, Switzerland, I attended the Thunderbird School of Global Management, where I earned an M.B.A. degree with honors in international finance.
During the past thirty years I have pursued a career as a general manager and finance executive, largely in international business. I have worked for private start-up companies as well as Fortune 100 corporations. I have enjoyed traveling to more than forty countries on five continents. In 1993 I received Digital Equipment Corporation¿s Circle of Excellence award for the successful results the team and I achieved with the company¿s sales and service operations in Moscow, Russia, where I lived for two years. In 2003 I decided to go after a professional qualification. I was among the top fifty scorers worldwide in the qualifying examination to become a certified treasury professional (CTP). In 2007 the Association of Financial Professionals named me to its Honors Program.
Today I am a founding partner in a multifamily, residential real estate investment fund and the chief financial officer of the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority in Richmond, Virginia. My wife, Celia, a registered investment advisor, and I live on a small horse farm near Richmond. Outside of work I keep busy as secretary of my college class, as treasurer of my college's regional club, as a member (tenor) of the Richmond Symphony Chorus, and as vice president and director of the Goochland County Free Clinic and Family Services, a non-profit organization that provides medical and dental care and basic services to county residents who are in need of assistance.

Rick Sample has extensive experience in finance, mergers and acquisitions, general management, and international business. Mr. Sample's professional experience ranges from start-up companies to Fortune 100 corporations and includes both publicly-traded and private companies in the U.S., the Caribbean, Africa, Israel, the former Soviet Union, and throughout Europe. His professional background includes resident expatriate assignments in Germany, the Netherlands, Russia, and Switzerland.
Beginning in late 1999, Mr. Sample became a board member and corporate secretary of the Guinea Investment Company Limited, an offshore private investment company. Mr. Sample also became a founding board member and the Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer of the Alumina Company of Guinea, Ltd., a private bauxite mining, alumina refining, and metal trading company with operations in West Africa generating annual revenues of US$ 140 million. Mr. Sample established the company's wholly owned subsidiary in Africa, the Alumina Company of Guinea, S.A., and served as its initial managing director. Mr. Sample implemented and managed the accounting, management reporting, treasury, tax, risk management, and corporate governance functions with staff in Guinea (Africa), London (U.K.) and Richmond, Virginia. In early 2000, Mr. Sample negotiated a $47 million working capital and currency hedging credit facility for the company with a syndication of European and South African banks. Mr. Sample also secured $80 million of political risk insurance from the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA) of the World Bank for the company's operations in Africa. From 2000 through 2004, Mr. Sample was also the president and a member of the board of directors of Industrial Advisors, Inc., a management services company in Richmond, Virginia, that provided financial, commercial, and general management services to the Alumina Company of Guinea, Ltd., the Guinea Investment Company Limited, and other companies.
Mr. Sample joined Genworth Financial in 2005 as Chief Financial Officer for operations in Australia/New Zealand, Asia, Canada and Latin American. In early 2008 he assumed a senior business development role to introduce new financial products into strategic international markets such as Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland and the U.K.
In 2009 Mr. Sample became CFO of the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority with responsibility for financial operations, information technology, and procurement/purchasing.
