Richard's Story
Richard (Rick) is from St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. He attended Lakeport High School from 1969 to 1974. After graduation, Rick first attended McMaster University, then graduated with a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Western Ontario in 1977. He later attended the University of Toronto, graduating from there with a Master of Health Science (M.H.Sc.) degree in Speech-Language Pathology.
After earning his Master's degree, Rick worked as a speech-language pathologist in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada from 1980 to 1983. He returned to Ontario in 1984, after spending 4.5 months travelling in the South Pacific. Rick worked as the first full time speech-language pathologist at the Peterborough Civic Hospital in Peterborough, Ontario, from 1984 until 1987, after which he established his own full-time private practice in speech-language pathology in Peterborough, Ontario. He later moved to Hamilton, Ontario, where he worked as a speech-language pathologist at Credit Valley Hospital in Mississauga, Ontario, Henderson General Hospital (part of the Hamilton Civic Hospitals), and Halton Regional Home Care in Burlington, Ontario.

to school to earn a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Communicative Disorders and Sciences from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo. In 1996, he was awarded an R. Samuel McLaughlin Centre for Gerontological Health Research research fellowship at McMaster University. The next year, he accepted a full time, tenure-track post at Brock University, where he continues to teach and conduct research in the Department of Applied Linguistics.
Rick has served as Departmental Chair and as a member of several committees at Brock University, including University Senate. He also served several terms as a member of the Board of Directors for Speech-Language and Audiology Canada, the national association for speech-language pathologists and audiologists in Canada. He is currently a member of the Accessibility Advisory Committee for Metrolinx and of the Government of Ontario’s Health Care Standard Development Committee, both in Toronto, Ontario.
Rick was married for 29 years, but divorced in 2009. He is the proud father of three children - all now adults - and three grandchildren. He is now engaged to be remarried, and lives in Burlington, Ontario.
