Richard's Story

Life After PHS and four years of college in the East, I moved back to Pasadena and Hollywood in 1971 with a new wife whom I had met at Yale -- a red-headed-actress-High-Maintenance-beauty from Vancouver, Canada. (Moral: Never marry a red-headed actress.) We moved up to Seattle in 1972, so that I could attend law school at the U. of Washington, and she could be closer to her family and friends in Vancouver. Our marriage ended two years later, and she ended up back in Vancouver while I stayed in Seattle. So I owe my presence in Seattle to her, and for that at least I'm grateful. I have been in Seattle for 33 years now, and there is no better place to live. I married again in 1980 to a wonderful woman (also a Yalie) whom I met in 1979 in New York City at a Yale Glee Club reunion dinner, of all things. She is still beautiful, smart, funny, capable, and a wonderful singer. And she puts up with me. Catie and I celebrate 25 years of marriage this next month (Oct. '05). I'm a lucky guy. We have two great sons, Tom (born 1982) and Charlie (born 1985). Tom graduated magna cum laude from Colby College (Maine) this past May ('05) and is now teaching English in Japan for a couple of years. Charlie is a junior, also at Colby. Both were high school football stars (running backs), and Tom was the leading receiver and rusher on the Colby Varsity until he broke his leg in a game his senior year. Charlie is now a rugby player in college. Both boys obviously inherited their superior athletic abilities from me. And pigs fly. I've been practicing real estate, land use, and environmental law with the same Seattle law firm since 1976 and have done pretty well at it, especially for someone who loathed law school and is really just an English Major at heart...Expand for more
. Am listed in The Best Lawyers in America and Who's Who in American Law, la de da. And I'm a Notary Public! And I know every lawyer joke anyone has ever told, thank you very much. I acted and sang for about 10 years in various community theater groups, principally the Seattle Gilbert & Sullivan Society (though I've given that up now) and have been on the boards of several community organizations, doing Good Works. A stinkin' pillar of the community, would you believe it. I read history and biography for fun, do some biking and hiking. For about 10 years I worked on my genealogy and have traced a lot of my ancestors back some 12 generations, but I'm done with that now. Have about 14,000 Dead People in my database, for what it's worth. Wife Catie is an MBA and works at Microsoft, but she started there long after the era of dotcom millionaires. So we're wage slaves like everyone else. But mortgage, elderly dog, and all, life is good. I still have my hair and good health, along with a gut I need to reduce. Our sons have done well, and their mother deserves most of the credit. I am still funny (well, some people think so) and a Confirmed Democrat. Was a big supporter of my college classmate Howard Dean, which is probably why he flamed out so badly. I was down in Pasadena this past August seeing my mom (still in the same house in Hastings Ranch), and the city is obviously much changed. PHS itself is now a fenced fortress, as you may know. My PHS days seem far behind me, and most of my high school friends have scattered to the four winds. But I still keep in touch with several, and the friends I made in high school and before are still among those whom I hold most dear. Would be happy to hear from my '67 classmates any time. Cheers.
