Rick's Story

Two weeks after graduation in June 1967, I was in basic training at Fort Knox, KY. I had turned-down a scholarship to college and enlisted in the Army prior to graduation. After three years in the army, with a 14-month tour of duty in Germany and 13+ months in Viet Nam, I decided it was time to go to college. I graduated from Michigan State University (Go Spartans) in March 1974 with a B.S. in Engineering and accepted a position with a large engineering firm in Chicago. For the next several years, I worked on many very interesting and challenging projects and traveled throughout the U.S. I eventually worked my way up the corporate ladder, became a manager and then a vice president. Somehow in my spare time I managed to get my MBA. With more responsibilities came larger and more complex projects, more traveling and or course more stress. By 1998 I had worked on projects in 27 different states and traveled to 49 of the 50 U.S. states and several foreign countries. In 2008, at the age of 59, I decided it was time to retire. I cashed in my corporate stocks, sold my properties in Illinois and moved to a reall...Expand for more
y nice area of Virginia. Although several companies have offered me positions, I prefer to work part-time as a private consultant or do research on projects that interest me. I did finally find time to travel to the 50th state (Maine) where I had not previous traveled. In 2013, I returned to Alaska for 10 days; I took my annual trip to Florida and South Carolina to visit friends; I went up to NYC for a few days; I drove down to Alabama; and of course made several trips to Washington DC. Nearly all my travel now is for enjoyment and not for business. I hate to admit it but I haven't kept in touch with most of our classmates since graduation and I've only returned to Jackson once every few years. However, I did attend the 45th reunion in August 2012. The visit to Jackson brought back many memories. I noticed that parts of the town have changed very little since the 1960's and other parts are hard to recognize. JHS doesn't seem to have change much, but Hunt Junior High School is no longer. I hope all of our classmates are in good health and doing well. I'd enjoy hearing from any, even if just to say "Hi".
