Rick's Story

Life I was born in East L.A. and grew up in Bassett where I lived till my mid twenties and returned to in my mid thirties. Growing up there was the best at a time when there was always lots of kids to play with, open fields to run through, trees to climb, fresh air and sunshine. My family life was very stable and it was an ideal childhood. My elementary school days at Keenan were the best! I was lucky enough to have some nice teachers and a great bunch of friends that I shared a lot of fun adventures with! I had a great time in High School despite my poor scholastic performance! I partied way too much and had lots of fun going on surf trips with the crew, playing music with different groups and generally hanging out without a care in the world! Could any of us have imagined what the 'real' world was going to be like? I sure didn't! I graduated from Bassett and went on to MSAC where after 3 semesters I got drafted and ended up serving in the U S Navy as a radiomen onboard the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk. I survived two combat tours in Viet Nam and hated military service. Getting out was one of the happiest days of my life! When I got out I was lucky enough to get a job with Pacific Telephone through my sister Randa. It was a great company to work for of which I'm now retired. I haven't been married (yet) but I have a beautiful 32 year old daughter, Brezy May who's now married and has given me the sweetest, most beautiful grand daughter, Joy Lynn. I also have a beautiful 26 year old daughter who's also given me a beautiful grand daughter, Lilli. My youngest daughter is currently serving in the US Navy as a Navy recruiter.. I started playing music in the 5th grade and I continue to play with several groups including the Claremont Symphony Orchestra of which I'm principal clarinetist, the Shrine band, the official band of the Shrinners' Children's Medical Center and Cool Joe's Tuxedo Junction Orchestra. I've also played with many other groups when needed as a sub including the LA Lawyers Philharmonic and their related group, the Big Band of Barristers. The founder/conductor of these last 2 groups, Gary S. Greene I first met in high school when we both played in the famed, California Junior Philharmonic under the baton of Gary's famous uncle, Dr. Ernest H. Katz. I'm also a community member of the Pomona Latin Youth Orchestra when school's in session. I love outdoor sports like surfing, skiing, hiking, camping and backpacking. I still like to get out in the water and slide a few whenever possible. I've had a great life, some stormy seas at times but a top-to-bottom tube ride now and it looks like the best is yet to come as I look forward to more adventures! The "now" photo was taken after a concert with the Claremont Symphony Orchestra in January 2004. I live in West Covina, respond to all my emails and would love to hear from you! Thanks for taking time to read my bio, read on for my school, work and military bio's and be sure to visit my pictures in the Photo Album and my thread in General Discussions as I wish you all Sunny Days, Good Surf, Sweet Tunes and Happy Trails, RICK... the fluteplayer P.S. I want to thank you all for visiting my profile! I hope you enjoy your visit! I invite you to join me on my Facebook page. There's a lot more info and photos. Everyone from BHS is invited as we'll always be friends!! School I started kindergarten at Keenan school where I stayed through 8th grade meeting people that I still know today. I was very lucky to have grown up in a time and place surrounded by a good family and so many great friends! In the 5th grade I started music lessons on the accordion with Louise Sandoval (Linda's sister)and in the 6th grade I started playing the clarinet. Little did I know at that time that music would play such a big part of my life to this very day! All I knew was that I loved it from the moment it was introduced to me. After the usual good times and bad times of going through adolescence at Keenan I went on to Torch and it was at this time that I started surfing. I was also continuing to develop my music skills. From Torch it was on to Bassett High where the responsibilities of education were becoming overwhelming, I was a terrible student (I was a terrible student all the way through school but it seemed to really show now). It wasn't that I didn't try, I just never caught on to the whole learning thing till years later in college. It's really a wonder I made it through at all but I did! The one thing that I did excel at was music and I had a great time playing with many different music groups t...Expand for more
hrough High School and college. The first one was the Pomona Concert Band which I joined when I was thirteen and continued to play with into my mid twenties. Later in H.S. I auditioned for and was admitted to the Jr Philharmonic Orchestra of California who continue to give concerts at major venues around Los Angeles. As a matter of fact I've just had the pleasure of playing a concert with them at Walt Disney Concert Hall this past June 16th, 2018. Traveling all around and playing concerts in so many different places was one of the best experiences of my teen years. Of course the best part of school was hanging with friends and partying. I was surfing a lot and became entrenched in the surf culture of the sixties. Some of the best times were those weekend trips to check out the surf from Huntington to Encinitas with my surf buddies. Summers we would hang out at Doheny with a whole crew of surfers and beach bunnies from Bassett! After graduation it was on to MSAC where my education was interrupted for a time by the war but I did gain valuable training in the Navy and later at Saddleback College that helped in my career with the phone company. It was also at Saddleback that I finally gained the skills necessary to be a good student. I have no regrets (well maybe one or two) and would do it all the same as I obviously don't always catch on the first time! Workplace Right before I got out of the Navy I was hired by Pacific Telephone and went to work for them immediately upon my separation from active duty. My sister Randa was the one who got me the job. I started working in Downtown L.A. in the same type of job I had done in the Navy. I was able to transfer to other jobs and locations around the L.A. area and eventually ended up in Orange County as a Service Technician which I did for the majority of my career in Orange and L.A. Counties. While working in Southern Orange County I lived in San Clemente and was able to surf almost daily. I also met my daughters mom at this time. It was a great place to be, I had a great job and a lot of good times with people I met on the job, partying with co-workers, surf buddies, taking surf trips and generally living in paradise! In the mid eighties Pacific Telephone changed to Pacific Bell and at this time my mom became ill and I transferred to the El Monte garage living in the house I grew up in with my girlfriend with our daughter on the way. Pacific Bell was acquired by SBC (Southwest Bell Communications) in the late eighties. After my mom's passing I returned to Southern Orange County (my girlfriend and I had split up by then but I have this beautiful daughter) to continue working down there. I worked down there through the nineties and in early 2000 transferred to SBC-ASI in Pasadena where I retired from. I met and worked with a lot of great people over the years and it was a good job that I was very fortunate to have. I retired as of June 2002 and I'm enjoying life more than ever now! Military I was drafted into the Army on December 30th of 1970. I was going to MSAC at the time and having the time of my life. This definitely put the skids on everything and my life has never been the same since. I was able to get a postponement of induction to finish the semester and then joined the Navy instead of going into the Army. I hated Boot Camp in San Diego and after Boot Camp was sent to Radiomen "A" School also in San Diego. After a nice summer in San Diego I graduated from "A" School and received orders to the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk CV-63 which was homeported at North Island in San Diego (it's now in the inactive fleet and interestingly enough was replaced by the USS George Washington which my daughter served on). As soon as I reported onboard it sailed off to a Westpac cruise which included two combat tours in Vietnam. I sailed all over the world on that ship and saw a lot of places while circumnavigating the globe twice. At one point after just returning from my first Westpac I was assigned temporary staff duty with CINCPACFLT (Commander-in-Chief Pacific Fleet) in Hawaii working on "Operation Homecoming" (when they brought the POW's home from Vietnam). I worked in Makalapa Crater and lived in the barracks at Pearl Harbor. It was a lot of fun in Hawaii but I eventually had to rejoin my ship in drydock at Hunter's Point in San Francisco. After drydock it was back on a Westpac cruise. Shortly after returning from the second cruise my enlistment was over and after what seemed like a lifetime of military service I was separated from active duty and returned to civilian life and a good job with the phone company.
