Rick's Story

Life Hi to anyone curious enough to seek a brief, mostly boring recap of what's gone on with me since '73. I graduated from Campbell University in '77, and later went back for an MBA. I got married in '78...Jane and I are still together. We have one daughter, Mary Kathryn, who graduated from Meredith, works for an architectural firm in Raleigh, is married and living in Oxford (as of this writing...September '08). After college graduation, I went to work for Rose's Stores for 11 years. Most of that time we lived in Henderson. While there, I became a CPA (which you may find amusing if not shocking). In '88 we moved to Wilson (about an hour east of Raleigh). Wilson is a nice little town of about 50,000. We like it here for the most part, although sometimes I still miss the hills of Forsyth County (it's mostly flat as a pancake here). One benefit is that we're pretty close to the beach...we go as often as we can, especially in the summer. I used to play golf a lot, but alas in recent years I've had recurring back problems. Music remains my passion. Dave Wilson, Mark Williams, and I have formed a band called McPherson Clay. We perform occasionally. We recorded our own demo CD of cover songs, another CD of covers and originals, and we're s-l-o-w-l-y working on a CD of all original songs. I've actually written a song or two...can you believe it? There's very little chance you'll see me accepting a Song Of The Year award...but it's fun. We attend all the NC State home footb...Expand for more
all games, and some of the away ones. We like to tailgate...while tailgating and tossing a ball around in October '06 I fell and broke my femur badly (yep, that's the big one). I was out of work 3 months. It's not the same as before but no complaints. Both my parents are still living, and in reasonably good health. They still live on Shattalon in the same house I grew up in. Hope you're doing well. Drop me an email sometime and catch me up...I don't hear anything out here in the hinterlands of eastern NC. Workplace After college graduation, I worked with Rose's Stores in Henderson for 11 years...various positions within the accounting area. In 1988 we bugged out of there and came to Wilson, where I worked for Standard Commercial Tobacco Company until it was merged with a competitor in '05 to form Alliance One International. I now drive to Farmville (25 miles) every day. Prior to the merger I was Senior Vice President and Secretary-Treasurer, and also Regional Financial Controller for North and Central America. Sounds confusing, I know. In the merged company I'm still the Regional Financial Controller. It's an interesting job most times, and sometimes it sucks...like most jobs I guess. I travel once in awhile...been to London several times (great city) and I went to Honduras a few times a year (a poor poor poor place), and some other countries now and then. Fortunately, I don't have to travel a lot...I like being home. I have lots more to tell, but I said I'd be brief!
