Rik's Story
Life:
I was, what would be called now, "a geek", but earned a Varsity letter in Tennis, played drums in the Band, was a member of the Letterman's Club, was tall (6'), skinny (172 lbs), wore braces and graduated at age 17. I spent 2 years at Santa Monica College where I was Sophomore Class President, Elections Commissioner, a Volleyball Team Member (I had grown to 6' 5") and was a Cheerleader (no more braces!). I graduated, then received a Scholarship to University of Southern California, played on their AAU volleyball team, was Vice President of Kappa Sigma Fraternity and majored in Economics. I finished up with 172 College & University Credits, but no Master's.
After a short try at Corporate life I became a Sailmaker in Newport Beach for 10 years (owning Taylor-Made Sails), was Commodore of Pacific Multihull Association, President of the U. S. Olympic Tornado Assoc., No...Expand for more
rth American Champion in Tornado Catamarans and Southern California Ocean Racing Champion in my 37' Sloop - "Wings".
I moved to Kona, Hawai'i in '77 where I "sort-of" fulfilled the prophecy in our Yearbook by becoming Executive Director, then President of the Board of Directors of Kona Family YMCA.
I have been a State Certified Residential Appraiser for nearly 30 years, after an 11 year career in Banking. I bred/ raise Irish Setters (now Golden Retrievers), grow Kona Coffee and operate HolualoaHostel.com in a re-constructed/re-modeled 40's vintage Coffee Shack on acreage overlooking Kailua-Kona.
I'm thrice divorced and have a daughter, now 17 years old, who can speak Hawaiian, dance ancient Kahiko Hula, play keyboards and Ukulele and who's lead videographer at Konawaena H.S. for "Hiki No", the Student News Network for Statewide Hawai'i Public Broadcasting Service (PBS).
