the Mississippi, Illinois and Ohio Rivers, moving barges loaded with freight which was mostly grain and chemicals. After graduation, I worked for Holland Stave Co. in Doniphan for a year or so and then enlisted in the Marine Corps. Discharged in 1971 and went to work in Columbia, Mo., as a policeman. Quit that around 1974 and started working in construction for a year or so, then foolishly bought a tractor-trailer rig to work for myself and get rich quick. Went back to riverboats and barges around 1978 and have been a captain for 24 years for Orgulf Transport Co.< Midland Enterprises < Ingram Industries. Largest tow moved was 62 barges (only 10 were loaded) north bound on the Lower Mississippi River. Routinely move 42 loaded barges south bound between Cairo, IL., and New Orleans, with a total gross tonnage of around 90,000 to 100,000 gross tons on a 9,000 horse power twin screw towboat, the motor vessel Justin T. Rogers.
Military
In bootcamp, I was assigned to platoon 3318.
In Hawaii, I was assigned to the MABS 24 message center at MCAS Kaneohe Bay.
