Carol's Story

I attended three high schools during my teens - Chatsworth High in California (Fall 1973), Del City High School in Oklahoma (Spring 1974) and I graduated from Nurnberg American High (1974-1976). I attended Kerr Junior High from 1970 to 1973 and Del City Elementary prior to that (both in Oklahoma). I enrolled in Rose State College (then known as Oscar Rose Junior College) in 1976. I became a "career student" there taking classes off and on (mostly off) over the next 33 years. Obviously, I was in no hurry to earn my degree, I just enjoyed taking classes. I finally graduated in 2009 with an AA in Liberal Studies. I then enrolled in Southern Nazarene University and graduated in December 2010 with a BS in Organizational Leadership. I also enrolled in the Interpreter Training Program at OSU-OKC in the late '90's and attended classes there for about 3-4 semesters. I really enjoyed the classes and the camaraderie among the students. I really wish that I had stuck with the program, but the only way to become proficient at sign language is to use it often and I didn't have the opportunity to do that, so I withdrew from the program and went back to RSC to pursue a different major. I've been a civilian at TAFB for over 30 years. I'm currently an analyst, but I spent over a third of my career as a jet engine mechanic. I'm divorced and I have one son who is an adult but still lives with me because he has autism. Back in the Day... GERMANY - I was in the clas...Expand for more
s of '76 at Nurnberg American High School, but graduated early in December 1975 because my dad decided to retire early from the Army & my stepmother was homesick to get back to the states before Christmas. I used to hang out at the "coffee house" down the street from the school. I also worked part time in the pharmacy at the Nurnberg Army Hospital through a work study program during the school year. My first full time job was on the pediatric ward at the same hospital the summer of 1975. When we first arrived in Germany, we lived in a nice apartment on the economy briefly that was on Thomas Mann Strasse. My fondest memory of Germany is of riding the streetcars. I would hop on with no destination in mind and just ride it around town to see the sites. Whenever I saw something interesting, I would get off & sightsee awhile until time to head home & then I'd catch the streetcar again. CALIFORNIA - We lived in a mobile home park at the end of Topanga Canyon Blvd in the mountains surrounding the San Fernando Valley. There was an orange grove at the foot of the mountain and I often enjoyed picking a few oranges as I passed by. Chatsworth High had a really nice campus. One of the things that seemed really different to me at the time were the vending machines on campus that dispensed fresh fruit. That appealed to my '70's flower-child sensibilities. I spent a lot of time hanging out along the beaches of Santa Monica and Venice and at the Canoga Park Mall.
