Rita's Story

I've been away from my "home base" since 1973. I call Riverside, California "home base" and it is simply because my mom still lives there and resides in the home she and my dad built and where I was raised. I love to go and visit, and enjoy the memories of my growing up years. Oh, changed it has in numerous ways, but, the home I grew up in is still just that....home. In August of 1973, my husband was sent to Tempe, Arizona to assume the pastorate of a small church and small congregation. Fortunately, my job with Social Security transferred me out there as well. There were several adjustments to make, but a major one was adapting to the heat of Arizona during the summer months. We bought a home in Mesa, Arizona and lived there for a few years. After working in the church there in Tempe for those years, my husband wanted to start a work across the Rio Salado on the opposite or Western side of Phoenix, Arizona. We moved to Glendale, Arizona, where we started a church from scratch....literally, and when we left in 1987 to move to Denver, we left a new church building that our growing congregation built across the street from lovely park in the City of Glendale, Arizona. We moved to Denver, where my husband assumed the pastorship of a church in Denver and the supervisory duties of Bishop of the District of Colorado. What an adventure! In 2002, we managed to purchase the church building we are now in and sold the "old church" to make the purchase. In July of this year, we will have been in Colorado 21 years. In February of 2007, we moved out of Denver to our current home in Byers, Colorado. We left the big city to the Eastern Plains of Colorado. This move will probably be it for quite some time. I hope so, anyway. We bought a home with some a...Expand for more
creage. Since we have graze land, the ranchers around the area, rent our land to graze their cattle and horses. We have been working on the house we are living in to make it more livable and comfortable. It was about 85% completed when we purchased it and had been empty for about two years. It was quite a bit of work, but, we're now beginning to see and enjoy the "comforts of home." I'm still working and commuting but, I don't expect to be doing that too much longer. I have 35 years of service with the Social Security Administration in July of this year. I really don't know where those years have gone. I look forward to retirement and would like to start a vegetable garden, purchase a couple of Black Angus, maybe raise some chickens, and bake, do some substitute teaching, and offer ESL classes at the local community center. I plan to continue with biblical studies and teachings to women and young people. There is such a tremendous need out there. Who knows, maybe I'll go back to school....I've always liked academia. November 20, 2013 - I finally retired. And, it has been approximately 3 years since my official retirement and I am still waiting for the days that I would want to go back to work. Quite honestly, I have never felt that way since the day I turned in my badge and said goodbye to the Federal Building in Denver, Colorado. One thing I have learned is that as much planning as we do; it doesn't necessarily go the way we actually "plan" whatever that plan may be. But, I am so enjoying my life. It has been challenging, unpredictable, sometimes great and sometimes not so great...but we hang in there and take it one day at a time. I thank the good Lord every day I wake up and live the day as planned and as unplanned. God is good!
