Rita's Story
Life
I have been married for 41 years as of last November to Larry Berson. We met in Fort Lauderdale and made our way to Alaska in l965. We married in Anchorage, Alaska, and have three grown children. Lea was born in l966, Jeanette was born in l968 and Joe was born in l970. We left Alaska in l971 in the fall and moved to Hawaii to build a ferro-cement fishing vessel. We ended up staying there for only 6 weeks. Too expensive for our blood. And the heat was trememdous. So we met some people from Bainbridge Island (just out of Seattle) and they told us that a lot of boats were being built in Port Townsend and Port Angeles, so we flew to Seattle from Hawaii, got on the Greyhound Bus and headed fo...Expand for more
r Port Angeles because it had the most people and job opportunities. We got off the bus with three kids (ages l, 2 and 5) and 8 duffle bags, a tool box and a typewriter. We had to rent the biggest car to accommodate everything. Anyway, we built our boat (a 38' salmon troller) and still have it in the side yard. We had to move to the country to accommodate the size of the boat. Anyway, we are still here in Port Angeles, directly across the Strait of Juan De Fuca from Victoria, BC. The kids all live in the area too which is a lot of fun for us. Lea has two daughters, Jeanette has one son and two daughters and Joe has one son. Larry and I are both retired now.
