Rita's Story
I was married in 1952 to a wonderful young man who wanted to be an active scientist. We lived in Washington. D.C. until Sept 1953 when we moved to Baltimore and he returned to Johns Hopkins to get his doctorate in Tropical Diseases. We then moved to Houston, Texas where he was a post Doc until 1960 when with two children, we took advantage of an opportunity to move to Venezuela - which was a democracy at the time. heir own and live in different places.
I taught school almost all of the years of our marriage, and had a half day pre-school in New Orleans which had an excellent reputation. When we both retired in 1994, we moved to a house on the Mississippi Gulf Coast which was sixty miles east of New Orleans. Sadly we took three days worth of clothes and some food and left when hurricane Katrina threatened. A tornado hit our street taking our house and all of our memories with it. We decided to move to St louis where our oldest son lives with his family, rather than re-build. My husband passed away in 2011, but I still live here and see my St Louiis family just about every day.
I take classes at Life Long Learning, and keep my hand in with young children by reading to a Head Start Class every other week.
Bess Myerson was in our class of 1945, as well as Ruby Dee, but I don't remember you, Lenora.
