Rob's Story

Hello Everyone: God is Good! I have been enjoying catching up on the stories of your lives, especially the people from Madras High School. Can you believe 25 years? Where did the time go? After School I went to Oregon State University where I was pretty active in the Drama department, my fraternity (Delta Upsilon), mountain biking, and Church activities. After graduation I went up to my old stomping grounds of Seattle to look for a job, but realized I really felt called to be a priest. So Bishop Connolly sent me to Mount Angel Seminary for the next 7 years to study and pray. It was a life changing experience. We studied under Benedictine Monks and spent much of the day in prayer, study and works of charity. I wish everyone could have the chance to spend at least a year praying and learning more about God and faith. I Graduated from Mount Angel and was ordained in a very special ceremony at St. Patrick¿s in Madras back in 1995. My first position was as an Associate Pastor under my mentor Fr. Dennis Strachota in Pendleton. They say that your first assignment is where you hang your heart and that is true. I was in the Let R' Buck town for 3 years and helped to make the Pendleton Roundup more family friendly. It also became more successful at the same time. As a seminarian (that¿s what they call you before you are ordained) I had spent some time at the Cathedral in Baker City. A Cathedral is the main church for the region, kind of like a Mormon temple as opposed to a stake house. I had always dreamed of one day being the Cathedral Rector, but that position is only given as an honor to older, more established priests. Somehow God blessed me with that position as my first assignment on my own. It was truly an honor, but literally consumed every moment of my days with all the extra responsibilities of the Mother Church and 3 distant missions. I was pasturing 4 c...Expand for more
hurches in English and Spanish, and President of 7 Corporations at the same time. I have to apologize to my friends because I kind of dropped off my relationships during those years. I was also constantly tired, so I apologize for not being very energetic at the last reunion. I was just ailing from years of being too tired! Before I was ordained I had always dreamed of being the priest in a poor multicultural town with a school and a lot of Spanish speakers. I am now living that dream in Ontario. I moved here in 2005, and I am loving it. We have a great school, wonderful dedicated staff, and committed parishioners. We are in the middle of building project because our church is growing so fast. (Hablo mas espanol que ingles.) I speak mucho Spanish and we have a big regional Catholic hospital. There are always lots of opportunities to minister, but without the stress of being in the Cathedral. In 2007 I went on a mission to Africa. It was another life changing event. We had raised money to put in some wells, and support the communities. One of my friends Fr. Francis Ekwugha invited me to his hometown of Ntu in Nigeria. While we were there, they blessed us with special titles of honor. I am now also known as Chief Nwanedinamba I of Ntu, which means ¿brother from far away.¿ If you are ever looking for a way to help the poor in Africa directly let me know. I will make sure that 100% of your gift goes to those most in need. I thank God all the time that we moved away from the city life in Seattle to the poor farm in Madras. It made all the difference in the world and helped form my character. Sports at Madras helped me learn to set high goals and achieve them. The people of Madras taught me about hard work, faith, love and commitment. I have now been given the opportunities to pass on those winning traditions. May God bless you on your journey. Rob Irwin
