Rob's Story
I have a lot of good memories of Woodlands and of growing up in Mississauga. I have done a pretty poor job of staying in touch with people, but still find myself thinking about where people are, what they're doing - especially as I approach the milestone of 50 YEARS OLD (Holy s**t!!!)
After Woodlands, I got a degree in Mechanical Engineering from U of Waterloo. The most fun that I had during those 4+ years was a summer that I spent washing windows with Tim Gent and George Munro. I have never laughed as long or as loud. I miss both of them very much (RIP x 2).
For the next five years I worked for Westinghouse Canada. During this period I lived in Libya, Pennsylvania, California and finally Saudi Arabia. I was building power plants, and really enjoyed the excitement of moving around and seeing different parts of the world. I started playing rugby - my Saudi team competed in the largest 10-a-side tournament in the world (in Dubai). The thrill was diminished when I got pancaked by a member of the British Navy team in front of a packed stadium. While in Pennsylvania I met my wife (Philis). We got married in 1987, and I became the proud stepfather of Shad and Steve (they were eight and six years old, respectively, when I met Philis). Shortly after we left Saudi in1989, our first daughter, Siobhan, was born.
I decided to look for a job that involved less travel, and went to work for Fluor Daniel (a huge, global, engineering/construction firm). Although I wanted to work in Fluor's office in Southern California, they offered me a position in a new off...Expand for more
ice in Marlton. New Jersey. I figured that if I could survive Libya, Jersey would be a piece of cake. After a failed attempt to move to Schenectady NY (the details are hazy and best left unsaid), I went back to school in 1994 to get my MBA at Rutgers (the State University of NJ). I ran the NYC Marathon, which was a huge thrill. A second daughter (Gillian) arrived in 1998.
I graduated from Rutgers in 2000, and have since become a partner at a Construction Management/Claims Consulting company in Moorestown NJ. We have survived through the recession, and are slowly growing our business. Maybe one day I will be able to cash out and retire, but that's a long way away. My wife is the owner of a flower shop; this gives me the opportunity to deliver flowers almost every weekend - all those years of college didn't go to waste. I also teach, part time, at the school of business at Rutgers (Camden). The extra money comes in handy, since our 21 year old niece moved in with us a couple of years ago. Kiley is studying nursing at Jefferson University (in Philadephia) - ka-ching!
My sons have families (and careers) of their own, my older daughter is a senior at Rutgers, and my younger daughter is a budding artist. We keep busy with pets (three dogs, one cool cat), cooking, the relentless pursuit of happiness (usually in the form of a martini or a manhattan) and trying not to act our ages. I have been blessed with good health (knock on wood) and a beautiful family.
If you've read this far, you should get back to work . . . but feel free to drop me a line.
