Rob's Story

Hi all, I just realized my profile is about 8 years out of date! So… To sum up the last 50 years, I guess I’d say that I’m a classic entrepreneur with a propensity for risk, and still doing it! Unlike many, however, I’ve started or been at the startup of organizations and ventures in not just the private but the public and not-for-profit sectors too -- four private sector and three government startups, half a dozen political campaigns (as a senior policy guy in three Presidential campaigns and three for myself), and another half dozen not-for-profit organizations. Over the years I've been involved in Homeland security, maritime policy, food and product safety and logistics, government policy making, politics, national transportation policy, entrepreneurship and finance -- and have had a fantastic time along the way, working for myself pretty much since I was 27. While I still have a strong anchor in history and tradition, I love the "new," whether in technology, people, organizations, whatever -- and my best friends these days are mostly 35 years old, plus or minus ten years, often running startups. I’ve recently brought in a CEO to run the decision support technology company I founded almost 20 years ago, following on the spin-out of a successful technology company in the Middle East that optimizes truck operations in and around ports. I spend a fair amount of my time these days working with young entrepreneurs from various communities (including Yale, Rice, and in the DC-Va region); have begun a book venture; am potentially starting an investment fund under the new tax bill; and am doing too many other things to objectively do well, LOL. On the home front, I’m still happily married after 37 years. My wife has retired for the second time after a very successful career at McKinsey, Marriott, National Geographic, and Discovery Channel –and today does paying and non-paying...Expand for more
boards about 150 percent of the time. Our 34 yo daughter (Eleanore) is doing well and having followed her parents to Rice and later business school at Yale is now head of internal consulting at Fossil Watch in Dallas. She and her husband (another Rice grad) have produced the first grandchild (I’m called “Obi Wan,” not quite ready to be grandfatherly); and our single 31 yo son, “Will,” is now living in Sydney, Australia where he’s the Sous Chef at a destination restaurant named “Tequila Mockingbird (!)” in case you ever find yourself over there. (Actually, I'm a pretty good cook myself, have done it all for our entire marriage so my son comes by it legitimately – although he was formally trained by a well-known woman chef and then spent time at the Culinary Institute in Hyde Park, NY.) We’re in the real estate consolidation game these days – sold the condo in Orlando, selling our condo in DC, all to consolidate into a somewhat modernist home we built about ten years ago on the Western shore of the Chesapeake Bay east of Williamsburg. We've traveled and collected local art from all over the world over the last 40 years with our kids and family -- unfortunately our parents have long since died, my father almost 30 years ago now, but while she was alive my mother would travel with us on chartered boats, climb castles, etc like a trooper. We particularly love beaches -- name one and we're likely to have been there -- and my wife and kids all scuba dive. My preference is to sit on the beach, drink, turn over and tan, and read a book. In addition to my business, I’m still pretty involved with the Council on Foreign Relations, the Economic Club of DC, and numerous tech organizations. than you can count. We’re all healthy, life is good, and I love seeing old friends, and, if you're passing through DC or the lower Chesapeake Bay area, definitely plan to drop me a note and come by.
