Rob's Story

Been about play, work and family, not necessarily in that order...but fortunately, play and work were one in the same and now so are family and play... Moved to Austin in 1979 for UT after leaving Univ. of Ill. Both schools seemed to have little to offer at the time, so I never degreed. (When your professors genuinely ask you to teach the class you came there for in the first place during week one and then later that year ask if you can help get them a summer gig, it's maybe time to move on.) Spent my 20's working for: Ohio Ballet, San Antonio Ballet, Ballet Austin, Spoleto Festival, New York City Opera, Metropolitan Opera, IATSE Local 205, Miss USA/Universe, The University of Texas and Paramount Theatre in Austin, and many corporate clients. As anything from stagehand/electrician to Production Manager or Lighting Designer. Earned my IATSE 205 and Equity Union cards in this time. Spent most my 30's in Orlando and NYC, working for or at Universal Studios/Orlando, the New York City Ballet, NBA, MTV, PBS, The Lincoln Center, Carengie Hall, a few presidents, & way too many corporate clients from Amex to Xerox...From Australia to Amsterdam, Sicily to Seoul. Also joined IATSE Locals 631, 477, 366, 52 and ONE in this timeframe, got engaged and married and then we had two way cool kids...time to leave NYC and raise them ba...Expand for more
ck in Austin. Spent my 40's all over the world, and when home helped my wife, Laurie, raise a couple kids; was in Scouting as a Scoutmaster; helped our son, Weston, earn Eagle; watched him march and win in the Texas State HS Marching Band Championship; helped as Laurie shepherded our adorable learning disabled daughter, Sara through the public and private school systems and onto SCAD where she's made Dean's List and now our son's outta college after winning national championships in his IT/Analytics field and has a bigger mortgage than us...God bless 'em. In my 50's still working for the NBA, Clinton Global Initiative, MTV and others. Have a sales company in my field selling a ubiquitous lighting control device I called the Pocket Console DMX. Designed/Invented/Installed portable NBA broadcast court lighting systems for the LA Lakers and Brooklyn Nets. Just finished writing, along with 11 other Subject Matter Experts, the (ETCP) Certification exam for our industry as it relates to electrical Power Distribution and safe industry practices. All kinda crazy now that I look back at it...all started at DHS hanging out backstage with a Crescent wrench focusing lights and running the light board...go figure...! Looking forward to retiring and having time to finally go earn that B.A. Ping me if you're curious enough! Ciao!
