Robert's Story

... You wouldn't believe it if I told you, but it has been no ordinary 9 to 5, 30 and out existence. I have had the previdge of some incredible experiences; from catching tropy bass up in the wilderness of Michgans' upper peninsula, to working in the high dessert of Nevada, to playing hockey at Joe Louis Arena, to surfing in Hawaii. And there have been plenty of trails and not-so-good experiences as well, but even they have had their silver linings too, just not as bright as I might have liked sometimes. But these hardships have shown me that I am much stronger than I (or anyone else for that matter) ever gave myself credit for. So where have the years gone?? They seem to pass more quickly with each successive year. High school was pretty painful for me, with a crummy home life, and all the cliquey bulls***t that seemed to dominate our graduating class, as I am sure it was for others. I only began to 'bloom' during college. I went to Michigan Tech after school, only to get hit by a car my second year. This was a near-death experience that changed my life in more ways than one, and ironically the first of two, with the other happening years later. I wound up dropping out, and eventually lost my dream of graduating as an Electrical engineer. Life has a strange way of taking the best laid plans and laying them to waste. I did work my way up through the engineering world the hard way, and probably doing better for it, but corporate politics as it is, I was limited by NOT having the degree. Not having a degree did afford me some amazing work experiences in engineering and beyond! I have been lucky to have navigated the turbulence of the economy with a number of different careers and founding my own business (and selling it at the right time too!!). Sure, it was a lot less secure and tougher than working for the same company 'till I retired, but more rewarding. Back in '98 I started skiing out west on mini 4 day vacations. That season, I seized the opportunity to go in January, February, March, and April. I fell in love with the area not realizing it would eventually become my home. I didn't have a lot of friends in high school, but many of these have become life-long friends. I would love to hear from some of the friends I had back in high school, in addition to the ones I already keep in touch with. The cliques, smart-asses, bullies, and all the snobs; ...now what happened to them?? I do remember some VERY influential teachers from school; elementary to high school. I looked up an number of them when I was still in MI to thank them for how vital their influence was on me. Even some of the more outwardly stern teachers got a bit misty eyed!! The funniest thing for me and the reason I can see how my stories might have affected these teachers is just how significant simple acts of decency, kindness, and compassion gave me the strength to carry on when times were REALLY tough for me. So here is to you Miss Pippin (3rd grade), Mr. McBrian (Elementary school), Mr. Jones (Junior High), Mr. Dolan (Junior High), Mr. Finn (Junior High), Mr. Stewart (Junior High), Ms. Webb (Junior High), Mr. May (Junior High) Mrs. Petrocella (Junior High), Ms. McCall (Elementary and Junior High), Mrs. Fetsco (High School), Mr. Engh (High school), Mr. Cichecki (High School), and the others I am sure I am not recalling now... THANK YOU! I keep thinking of Mr. Engh's Electronics class; I always knew I would be working in and around electricity someday, but NEVER thought I would go from 13.8 VDC to 500,000 VAC!! Thanks for the encouragement, Mr...Expand for more
. Engh!! Me??? After breaking off my engagement earlier in the decade, I decided it was time for a change. With the economy falling apart in Michigan, and after 9/11 I accepted a job with the Federal governement and moved to California. I figured the first half of my live wasn't so hot, and I was determined to make the second part of my life happier. Thankfully, I don't work for the government anymore. I did work for the Feds the first time I came out here (I NEVER imagined I would be back in CALI after my first experience), but all that has changed. I have a letter from the Chief of Staff from the Bush administration, and actually spoke with him in conversation that encompassed a potentially serious 'breach of security' found in the course of my work for the FEDS. Doing the right thing made me a target and cost me my job in the short-term, but taking the situation to the White House eventually cost bigger fish their jobs. At least I know I did what I knew was the right thing!! I later found out, after leaving Government service, just how significant the potential breech was, but as they say, "If I told you, I would have to kill you!!". I am truly in a trade that, even if it is a bit slow right now, has basically defied the slump in the economy. Everyone needs electricity!! Next year is suppose to be a record year for work, so the future is 'bright'. California...Land of fruits and nuts!! No truer words have been spoken! Great weather and outdoor opportunities, but STUPID government!! Of course, the legistators get THEIR money!! Perhaps we can teach the govenor English this year, if the budget permits!! I am relying on their double-standards and karma to interceed!! Two things that were hard for me to get use to; how fantastic the women take care of themselves out here (I attribute it to an active lifestyle and virtually no Winter), and all the luxury cars around -- it is like seeing Chevys and Fords in Warren!! It can be a small world out here. I was working on a project for the local utility and ran across the name Robert Wassmer for one of the residences. Long story short, I recognized the name from our graduating class. His wife was really gracious and sweet, but he must be a bit of a snob (a 'professor' at the local university -- I pictured a sport jacket with patches on the elbows, an ascott, and a pipe!). I reached out with two voicemails at his work, and never got a call. Our class sure could be cliquey and snobby!! When working for the government in the course of my duties, I met Ted Nugent (truly, a really NICE guy), Mickey Rooney (an ASSHOLE who must be bitter he travels coach), Richard Roundtree (nice guy as well -- very gracious and understated), Bill Walton, and Dave Attell. Chris Webbers' girlfriend at the time, Tyra Banks, use to come through the Sacramento airport regularly, but I never saw her. I have realized that Michigan feels like another life to me now; a home that looks familiar, but feels strange. Time has passed, and softened my recall of painful times, and mellowed my recall of the good times too!! My girlfriend and I visited in August of 2008. She wanted to meet my Mother and sister, as well as see the state. I figured if they couldn't run her off, she was probably a keeper. (I guess so, we are still together after over a year!!). She has been a blessing, my voice of reason, and overall positive influence. I am so very greatful for her. I have build a life (and a career that I can take ANYWHERE in the WORLD) here in California, but who knows when the winds of change will blow again!!
