Robert's Story

Let's see. has it really been 35 years since we were all together at EGHS? The last reunion I went to was (I think) the 15 year one. It was held at the Holiday Inn Beachside and was so boring that never went to another. I have pretty much stayed in Florida all this time. After a 4 year stint in the Marine Corps, I came back to Eau Gallie and went back to school. I worked my way through Brevard Junior College by running live sound for local bands. Eventually I needed a day job and started doing land surveying work. I ended up getting a full academic scholarship to FIT, where I studied Electrical Engineering, where I learned that I did not want to be an electrical engineer. A bad car accident during the spring of my senior year put an end to that direction in my life. I continued land surveying, and eventually moved to Pensacola to be nearer my Mom, who was getting up there in years. I got my Land Surveying license, bought a house, and started my own surveying business. In 2005 Hurricane Ivan came through Pensacola, leaving behind a lot of destruction. And then the next year Hurricane Dennis followed, dropping a large pine tree on the roof of my house. With the downturn in the real estate market around that time, it became a struggle to ...Expand for more
make a living in Pensacola. I was really missing Central Florida, so I started looking around for a job back down this way. Finally, in 2007 I hooked up with a big construction company out of Montana and signed on as Project Surveyor for a large $70 million water reservoir project being built near Port Charlotte on Florida's west coast. So now I'm living on the water (Charlotte Harbor) with my cat, working 12 hour days and fishing for redfish off my dock when I'm actually home and not at work. I really enjoy traveling to new places, although I rarely get the chance to get away. I have managed to spend a couple weeks in Hawaii (Waikiki Beach and Honolulu on Oahu) and have made a couple trips to South Africa, where I got to see lions and rhinos and hippos and monkeys and giraffes and zebras and such. I'd really like to visit Australia still, and also want to explore the different islands in the Caribbean between hurricane seasons. I guess that's pretty much the last 35 years in 5 paragraphs. Sigh.... Interesting to look at the names here on Classmates.com and still remember the high school days. Hopefully I will make it to a reunion in the near future and see if any of my old friends show up. I'll try to get a couple pics on soon. Cheers, Bob
