Robert's Story
Life
I was at Contra Costa College for a year but, uncertain of a major, joined the Air Force. They sent me to Syracuse University to study Czech language for a year, and then I was off to Germany with my bride, whom I met at the Syracuse USO. I left Germany three years later with indelible memories and a son, Robbie.
The Air Force sent me in 1966 to The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, to get a BS in Business, and after commissioning, they sent me back for an MBA. During the UT days, my first daughter, Andrea, was born.
Assignments followed to bases in Illinois, Korea, Alaska, and Alabama. While in Alabama, 1979, I re-married. My last assignment was as AFROTC Commandant of Cadets at Washington State University, Pullman.
During my first year at WSU, my second daughter, Katie, was...Expand for more
born. In 2005, she gave me a second granddaughter, Abigail Rose. Katie separated from the Air Force in 2006 and is now employed in Virginia.
I retired from the Air Force in 1985 and, four years later, became a public school English teacher in Kitsap County, Washington (across Puget Sound from Seattle), a well-kept secret of best places in America to live, despite Money Magazine, some years ago, selecting Bremerton, my home town, the best small town in the country.
After 20 years of teaching English, from university to seventh grade, I retired, once again, in 2006 to discover what the third third of my life had to offer. Last year, the answer came quickly, and I'm now hacking out an unplanned-for future, with Katie, Rob, wonderful friends and colleagues, and former students staying close.
