Robert's Story
Hello friends,
Well I guess I've put this off long enough, I was pleasantly surprised when a few of you asked me to write my story, so here we go. If you haven't seen me around the old neighborhood for the past 28 years or so, here's the reason why. Back in 1981 I was operating heavy equipment in Rockwood Michigan, at a Sand Quarry called Ottawa Silica Co. I was employed there about 6 years when the economy began to go south, do you guys remember our last recession? My parents had just returned from vacationing around the U.S. and bragged about this place they visited called Tyler, Texas. They just fell in love with the town, and the people in it. While they were there, Dad toured the Carrier Air Conditioning Plant considering work there, and the next thing you know they're going to sell their home in Michigan and move to Tyler, Texas. I was doing pretty well at Ottawa Silica job wise, and was living in a nice apartment in Rockwood, but this sounded to me like a good way to bust out of the Downriver area, and venture out to greener pastures. Besides, I was seriously concerned about the future of the auto industry and Detroit's long term future regarding good paying, secure jobs. To make a long story short, I took the plunge and left Michigan to find work in Texas, The New Frontier. I wasn't alone, I'm sure you all remember the bumper sticker that said, "The last one leaving Detroit, turn out the lights." I mean things were getting bad, and there were a l...Expand for more
ot of us who left to find more secure jobs. Fast forward 5 years from then, and I'm married to Jan Pruitt who you probably remember from Trenton High, and we've got a 2 year old son named Jason Robert Bone. Jan and I currently have a nice home in Whitehouse, Texas; our son is now 25 and lives out on his own with his girlfriend Alex. We enjoy Cruises, trips to Vegas, eating out with friends, and our little Yorkie Rudy. Oh ya, and motorcycle rides on my 2004 Road Star 1700cc Midnight Edition. As for work, I'm still employed at Carrier 27 years now, and I'm currently a Union Representative DFT Specialist for the Sheet Metal Workers local 337. DFT stands for (Demand Flow Technologist) which is just a fancy title for a Time Study Specialist. I've been in this position for around 10 years now. I keep the Company honest regarding the employee's work loads on the assembly lines at Carrier, and monitor the Bonus the Company pays its employees for exceeding their work schedules. I'm also a member of the Union Negotiating Committee, which negotiates our contract ever 3 years. I'm looking forward to retiring; I just don't want to get old to do so. There's lots of thing I want to do once I do retire, most of all devote more time to my Art work, my hobbies, and supplementing my income by buying and selling on eBay.
For now though I can honestly say, I have no regrets.
Life is good here in Texas, and I hope the same goes for all of you too!
