Robert's Story
Life
Went to college at Indiana State University after high school; joined the Navy in 1984 and retired due to disability in 1995. Moved to Los Angeles, CA in 1998 and worked as a second level support engineer for Xerox Corp. in El Segundo, CA. After that contract expired, I was hired as a network engineer for Vault Technologies [vaultech.com], a managed services provider in the Century City area of Los Angeles. After the dotcom collapse in 2001, we moved from Los Angeles to Leesburg, FL where I worked from June 2002-May 2003 as a network engineer for Nationwide Publishing Co [home of the Claims Pages]. From May to September I was Network Engineer for The Catholic Community of St. Paul, in Leesburg, FL, where I am a communicant. As of 1 December 2003, I was the IT/Database Manager for First National Savings Bank of Lake County, a major local bank in the metropolitan Orlando, Florida area. This unfortunately only lasted for 6 weeks; in January 2004 I was let go, and 2004 became a time of great change. I am now a reservation sales agent for Walt Disney World, and am trying to get into their IT department. Somehow, life will get ahead. . .:). The Walt Disney World job lasted for nearly a year; it was rapidly followed by a month with America Online, then nearly a year with a specialized software company, EnableSoft, Inc. In early 2006, I was let go [due to "business reasons"], but have since started as the Network Administrator for Hilb, Rogal, and Hobbs, a major insurance firm in their Orlando and Gainesville offices. Moving up. . :)
Well, life has a way of surprising you; HRH lasted nearly a year and a half, but gave me a rude surprise when it was over [went in to the office one morning, and got told that my time was up]. I was out of work for over 7 months; as of Mo...Expand for more
nday, 14 April I'm starting work back in Los Angeles as a NOC engineer for a major social networking provider.
Workplace
I've spent my adult life in two fields I never originally imagined myself in; first the nuclear power field [as a nuclear propulsion plant supervisor for two different Navy submarines {the Kamehameha and the Philadelphia}], then since 1993 I've been working in the Information Technology field after being injured and retired from the Navy. My IT career started as a hobby, and after two years of college became a career path, first as a network technician during college, then as a support engineer for Xerox and Samsung Electronics. This was followed by time in the dotcom world as a Network Engineer for Vault Technologies, a Managed Services Provider [MSP] in Century City until that company closed due to being unable to obtain further financing.
After the loss of the Vault Technologies position, I was out of work for over a year, and in that same time, I moved my family from Los Angeles, California to the greater Orlando, Florida area. Since that time, I have been a database analyst for Disney Worldwide Shared Services, a network engineer for Nationwide Publishing Co.Inc., a network engineer for the Catholic Community of St. Paul, and now the IT Manager for First Federal Savings Bank of Lake County.
Unfortunately, the First Federal Savings Bank gig lasted only about 6 weeks; they were bought out by a larger regional bank, and I was one of the first IT types to be let go. :( Over the past 2 years, I've been through a number of different positions, most recently working for Hilb, Rogal, and Hobbs, a major insurance group, as the network administrator for their Orlando and Gainesville offices. Hoping and working towards this one being the last one. :)
