Robert's Story
Life
Robert Comeaux
My life has been a long and winding road full of twisty/turny things. I dropped out of college (okay, with a strong nudge from UNO) in 1976. I worked at a convenience store for awhile, and then I went to work offshore. I spent about 6 great years working in the Gulf having a pretty good time, and made pretty good money. Then I went to work in a family business and spent about 6 more years beating my head against a wall. While beating my head against a wall, one of the best things in the world happened to me. I noticed a rash was developing¿over my whole body. The short story is that I was (literally) allergic to my work. What is an untrained, unskilled ex-oilfield worker supposed to do? I returned to college (Nicholls State University).
My plan was to attend school for a couple of years; earn an associate degree in business, and then go and manage a small business somewhere. At 34 I was a bit too old to muck around with college. I graduated from Nicholls State University in 1994 with a B.A. in History. Now at age 57 I hold an MA in History from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and I am working on a PhD in English at ULL--I should start taking comps in the fall. ...Expand for more
Presently I am an English/History instructor at Northwestern State University. So much for prior planning, huh? Along the way I married Alisa Hayner Comeaux (now a graduate student here at NSU), and we have a gorgeous 10 year old--smart and sassy--baby girl named Jennie Alice Comeaux. Jennie makes everything worthwhile. Alisa and I are now divorced, but she lives three blocks away, so my daughter practically lives here.
College
My roommate in college was Shawn Heingarten. He was a great roommate--even if he graduated from Brother Martin.
Workplace
I worked at many places over the course of my life. I worked at the Tiffin Inn for a few months; I worked at Time Saver for a couple of years; I worked for Production Rentals filtering mud, NOWSCO Pumping Nitrogen and shoving coil tubing a mile or so into the ground, and I worked for Best Hughes doing the same thing as NOWSCO. I was part owner in a family business for a few years, until allergies got the best of me. In college I worked as a tutor, in the library, and at La Quinta as a Night Auditor. In Grad school I was also a TA. Now I work as an instructor at Northwestern State University. I teach History and English--mostly to incoming freshman.
