Robert's Story
Sometimes I wonder how I ended up in Utah living behind the Zion curtain, where the religion, the climate, the politics and the remoteness bug me on a daily basis. Other times, I remember I'm here because I love to ski and hike, I like to laugh at the doings of morons, and there's a good airport in Salt Lake, and I love nothing more than a good road trip!
I'm here because it's where my kids are, and when they're old enough to leave, I may too.
I'm a sentimental old crank now, but that really hasn't much to do with old age, because I cried my eyes out at 16 watching Brian's Song, and I cried my eyes out two days ago watching the Sex and the City movie (my wife made me watch; I was no big fan of the television series).
I love to watch my 16 year old son play baseball and listen to him play the piano, and I cringe every time he drive...Expand for more
s the car out of the driveway with his just-issued license resting in his pocket. I love to watch my 5-year-old ski, because she's fearless and happy as can be flying down the mountain. I love to watch my 3-1/2-year-old sleep, because that's the only time he's not driving me nuts (but really he's cute as hell even when he's driving me crazy; what 3-year-old isn't?).
I'm saddened that I don't recognize more of your names as I look at the list of my classmates. It reminds me of what a self-absorbed jerk I must have been at 17, and it makes me think of a richness of life I don't have because I didn't get to know many of you very well.
So, I look forward to seeing those of you I remember and those of you I don't, and I hope to get to know you all a little better. 30 years? What a long time! Here's to a good start to the next 30!
