Robert's Story

Life Married Sylvie Savage 1968. She and I have known each other since grade school. Courtesy of the US Army,we lived in several locations in the US,Redstone Arsenal,Alabama Sandia Base,New Mexico, Fort Carson Colorado and spent 18 months in Okinawa where our only son, Everett, was born. I finished college in 1972 and went to work as a consulting engineer out of Anchorage in electric power systems, power plants, transmission lines. Sylvie and I were divorced in 1975, while I was City Engineer in Cordova. I moved back to Anchorage, rejoined the consulting engineering ranks and set up the firm of Dryden & LaRue Consulting Engineers. I remained single until 1990 when I married Audrey Parker, another high school classmate. We lived in Anchorage, getting her two sons and my son out on their own. We divorced in 2000. I continued in Anchorage until the spring of 2003 when the opportunity arose to come to Sitka. I was tired of the incessant pace of consulting and took the job with the City of Sitka as systems engineer. I scaled down my house by 2/3, bought a nice slow diesel cruiser boat and started doing the things I never had time to do. In February of 2005 I married April Wilkening, a 31 year resident of Anchorage who I had met in 2001. She is a wonderful partner in all I do. We still live in Sitka with our three dogs. Life is good here. We are looking forward to retirement in the near future. Workplace I worked for State Highways during Col...Expand for more
lege as a surveyor and weighmaster. I was a Special Weapons Electonics Tech in the Army. After my military service in 1971, I went back to school completing my degree in electrical engineering. In 1972 I went to work in Anchorage as a consulting engineer working on electric power systems all over the state and that eventually developed into my own business, Dryden & LaRue Consulting Engineers. We also started a company called Dryden Instrumentation which my brother James continues. I left that company in 1990, forming Power & Control Engineering where I built power plants, fuel tank farms, and control systems from Barrow to Juneau. In 2003 I closed that business and now work for the City of Sitka as senior electrical engineer, primarily in the electric power department. We are almost 100% hydroelectric and it is an interesting and challenging job. Military I went to US Army basic training at Ft. Lewis in the spring of 1989 and then to AIT at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama (Marshall Space Flight), and Sandia Base New Mexico. I was trained as a special weapons electronics technician working with missle ordinance primarily. My major assignment was with an ordinance group on Okinawa for 18 months and then a short stint at Ft Carson, Colorado, before an early release to return to school in the fall of 1971. It was great to get out but my military experiences was life changing. Updated 29 June 2010 Still in Sitka, Still with April, Still Working
