I enjoyed 37 years of teaching Spanish at Columbus Tustin Middle School and previously C.E.Utt Intermediate (Middle school now). During those 37 years I had the opportunity to share the cultures of the many Spanish speaking countries with my students. Of course Argentina was frequently discussed and shown due to my previous 2 year LDS Mission served there while in the process of my degree in Spanish from Brigham Young University. Part of the university training was done in Mexico City, DF to which my wife also accompanied me. During the years of teaching Spanish Mexico's culture was frequently discussed as well due to our family's travels to about 28 of Mexico's 32 states. DÃÂa de los Muertos on Nov. 1st and 2nd was a big deal in my classroom with the OFRENDA that took many hours each year to set up and take down. The objects placed on the ofrenda made up an elaborate display with items collected in small towns and villages all over Mexico. It was fun working with so many students over the years sharing the language and the culture as they began their Spanish studies. Some of them have contacted me later informing me of further studies or even working using their Spanish in later years. It was always a joy when a former student would contact me and share his memories of the class at CT or even Utt. I was also priviliged to work with man...Expand for more
y very professional co-workers at C.T. over the years who were very dedicated hard working individuals who I would have been proud to have taught my own sons. My wife was always very supportive in my Spanish teaching efforts allowing the expenditures of money from family funds to prepare these special cultural presentations, and obtain more cultural items and AV equipment for use in the classroom. She was also very supportive of the extra evening and weekend hours sometimes needed to prepare these presentations. During my final year of teaching I had to take off work for open heart surgery and the other faculty members and students were very kind in their thoughts and cards forwarded to me. I was able to return to the school at the end of the year to attend the final CT graduation that I would see before beginning my retirement. The thirty seven years have truly been rewarding but not without its occasional headaches and challenges. Now during retirement traveling frequently to as many countries as possible in different areas of the world is my enjoyment. My wife participates in some of them but does not have that much afinity for travel but she is very supportive in my desire to do so. I have now had the pleasure of visiting approximately 52 countries and hope to visit more if my health continues after recovery from the heart surgery in Feb of 2006.
