Robert's Story

Had a major heart attack in January 2008. They used the defibrillator on me 34 times. After surgery the doctor told my emergency contact (which happens to be my landlady) not to expect me to wake up. Recovery has been slow but I am improving. With that being said. I'd like to write a little about some the more memorable moments I can remember about my time at Atlantic High School; while I can still remember them, and still have the chance. I realize I'm going to forget to include some things/people and shorten other things just to keep this as simple as possible. I will probably add some things and edit others as I remember them. I moved to Delray Beach just before school was going to start for my sophomore year. The first persons I met were Brenda Cook and her brother Larry. They lived just a block down from my house. Brenda and my sister Bridget became friends. School was about to start and I went to register my classes for the term. There was a teacher there taking registrations and suggested I take one of his Public Speaking classes. That was how Mr. Schiffermuller brought me into Public Speaking and Drama (where I spent most of my free time). In his speech class I met Alberto Coll who eventually became my best friend before he graduated and went off to college. After that I eventually became friends with Toby Largent, Steve Trivette and Bob Jordan. I found that our school did not have a chess club. So I started one and sat first chair in tournaments. Not so much because I was the best chess player, but because I would take on another schools best player giving us a chance to beat the other schools as a team. One of my other most time consuming extra curricular activities was Chorus and the Ensemble. Not to mention the annual school musicals. It's amazing I ever fou...Expand for more
nd time to study or attend classes with all the extra stuff I was doing. My first play was Arsenic and Old Lace. My first musical was My Fair Lady. I remember we used to rent the original costumes for the musicals. Which I thought was just the coolest thing ever. <Insert here where some other stuff happened and then more stuff.> My mother died during summer break in 1974. I was in the middle of doing Snow White and the Seven Dwarves at the Delray Beach Playhouse (playing the prince... can you imagine that). After that I didn't go to classes much during my senior year. My father moved to Miami, my sister moved in with my half-sister in Utah. I stayed in an apartment in Boynton Beach till the school year ended in 1975. I came up 1/4 of a credit short and did a semester of summer school in Hialeah to get my diploma. I'm not really sure how many people even noticed I did not attend graduation ceremonies. Other things that I remember or made an impact on my life. Steve Trivette was asked to watch Mr. Bryant's house while he went away for a few days. We of course had to have a poker party there. Steve, Toby Largent, Bob Jordan, George Matthews, Carl Imboden and myself. I don't know where we got the booze from or the cigars but some of us got really sick. Sitting on the sea wall at the Boynton Inlet late at night. It had a real calming effect. Junior Prom - I was lucky enough to ask Aurora Siegl and she accepted. I was unable to go to the senior prom... so this was a very special event in my life. Our 10 year class reunion. I ran into Steve Trivette - He told me that he never liked me in high school. And all this time I had thought we were good friends with a friendly rivalry. I never did get a chance to ask him what it was that made him dislike me. <Insert more stuff here>
