Robert's Story
Life
Upon my return from Viet Nam in 1968 I married and had two daughters. While working as a carpenter I entered college. After completing college in 1974 I obtained my general contractors' license and worked exclusively for commercial developers. My first marriage ended in 1977. In 1979 I accepted a position with Thrifty Corporation as Owners representative responsible for construction, public liaison, and architectural coordination. My responsibility consisted of Thrifty Drug Stores, Big 5 Sporting Goods, Trak Auto Supply, and Crown Book stores. In 1984 I joined Shapell Commercial and Industrial Corporation and served as the Director of Construction. I was responsible for commercial and industrial projects. In 1986 I joined Moran Construction Company as Vice President of new business development. While at Moran, I also managed commercial aviation projects and public sector mid-rise projects. In 1990 I joined Avia Development Group, an aviation facilities developer, and manag...Expand for more
ed projects in the Western region of the United States. I left Avia in April of 1992 and started my own Development Company focusing on International Air Cargo and Facilities Development. After six years of traveling from country to country I decided to sell my business. In January 1998 I joined the University of California Irvine as Director of Construction. My responsibilities are to manage construction and inspection services. The University currently has $750,000,000 under construction and $1,239,000,000 in planning. After 28 years of being single I married Linda Kaplan in 2005. Linda owns a furniture manufacturing company "Great Estates Collection". We both plan on semi-retirement in 5 years to travel and focus on furniture design and marketing until we tire of it. I have six grandchildren ranging from 19 years to 9 years and Linda has two, the first is 8 years and the other is 6 years. Life has been very good to me and I feel fortunate to continue to live in Orange County.
