Robert's Story

I attended grade school at Cooper Lane Elementary School in Prince Georges County Maryland, going on to 7th and part of 8th grade at Bladensburg Junior High School in Bladensburg, Maryland. When my father's job moved to New Jersey in 1969, I finished 8th grade at Somerville Junior High School and then attended Somerville High School, graduating in the Class of 1973. Following High School, I applied and was accepted to the Electronics Engineering Technician program at the RCA Institutes in New York. Unfortunately, they closed their doors before I could start the program. As a result, I made hasty application to Somerset County Technical Institute in Bridgewater and was accepted into their program in time to start in fall of 1973, completing the Electronics Engineering Technician program in June of 1975. After my first year, I was grandfathered into the Somerset County College (now RVCC) Associate in Applied Science program and graduated with my degree in December 1975. During my time at SCTI, I was invited to participate in examinations in order to receive certification through the National Institute for Certification of Engineering Technicians (NICET) which I aced, receiving my Certification a few months following graduation. In the fall of 1973, I joined Engine Company #1 of the Somerville Fire Department. I attended Somerset County Fire School, taking required Firefighter 1 and Firefighter 2 programs during the next year, and began responding as a firefighter to alarms. Over the ensuing years, I took courses in basic and advanced pump operations and certified as an assistant apparatus operator and began driving the 1980 Mack engine. A few years afterward, I took Fire Officer courses and was elected to serve in Second and First Lieutenant positions with Engine...Expand for more
Co 1, and elected to serve in 1989 as Captain. During this time, I also served as acting chief, as the current chief resigned when his job was transferred to Texas. In June 1989, I was elected to fill the empty Chief's chair, which I held from July 1989 through December 1996. In 1997, I returned to line firefighting duties and eventually was elected to the position of Secretary of Engine Company #1, which I held until I retired from the fire company in 2014 after 40 years of service. I continue to hold the rank of Ex-Chief and am permitted to attend company and department events in that capacity. As for personal life, I was married in 1980 for five years which ended in divorce. In 1990, I began dating a woman that I was introduced to by a fellow SHS grad. Chris and I hit it off quickly and were married in late 1991. We have been happily married now for over 31 years and are continuing to enjoy our relationship. These days, I mostly keep busy with home improvement projects, woodworking, and amateur radio. We live in the house in which my mother grew up, that was occupied by my grandparents, parents, and now us. Being an older home, it always requires some TLC. In between the home repairs, I am constructing my own woodworking shop in the building built by my grandfather for his cabinet shop, and am also renovating a room in the same shop to serve as my ham radio station and electronics workshop. A 50 foot ham tower awaits installation out behind the shop along with antennas to go on them. My goal is to have the tower completed during the coming summer (when it will be dry enough for a concrete truck to drive across the lawn to pour the base). It is indeed hard to believe that it has been 50 years since we graduated from SHS! It seems like only yesterday!
