Robert's Story

Life Since graduating from Wooster,I moved back to Texas.I attended West Texas State University in Canyon for two years.Married here, but went in the Air Force during The Vietnam War.I spent a year in Thailand attached to the Wild Weasles. After discharge I went back to Canyon,TX.where I graduated from Amarillo College in air conditioning.I worked in Amarillo for six years before going to work for Canyon Independent School District.I wasthe senior air conditioning technician for thirty years before retiring. The gray headed old man in the group picture is me.The lady in the picture is my wife of 44years.Who is not in the picture are my two adorable grand-daughters.I've a brother-in-law that has written a book about Texas."Texas In Her Own Words" by Tweed Scott. He has included me in that book along with Darrel Royal, and Willie Nelson, about the Texas attitude we have.A fun book. School Being an Air Force brat I was moved every three years. That made me the new kid on the block so I had to either be diplomatic or fight it out.More often than not it was diplomicy that won out.Maybe that is the reason I'm easygoing and friendly.I rarely meet a stranger.Sad to say with all that moving it was easy to lose touch with friends. Now that I've settled in one place I am well known in town. College When I went to West Texas State in the late 60's the professors just considered you as cannon fodder. They could care less if you passed their class. How times have changed. Now they want you to pass so they can get more students to attend their class's.The better they look the more money they get.I was in ROTC and on the drill team which helped when they were going to draft me for my grades.I just never could get along with the college system.I fared better after the Air Force and went to vocational school. At least they taught me my profession and cared if I passed. Workplace The day I was to go to work for Ray's Refrigerated Air my daughter was born.Needless to say I ended up going to work a few days later.Ray and Hellen became my daughter's god parents. They taught me alot about my profession before Ray ...Expand for more
had to retire. He passed away a few years later.I've missed his help in times of troubleshooting. If I could have learned half of what he knew.A job opened up with Canyon Schools so I took it.I've been the senior HVAC Tech for thirty years now and still enjoy the work and the kids.I never know what I'm going to work with each day.Natural gas, refrigerants that can freeze or suffacate you,and Electricity in the 220 to 480 range. This is one job that you had best stay focused. The gambling I do day in and day out is deadly to your health if you don't stay focused. But the kids are why I do it.My job is to give them an environment in which to learn. The kids make it worth it.I never know what they will say or do to make me laugh.Like Art Linkletter said "Kids say the darndest things." As of June 30,2010 I have retired from the HVAC field.I,ve been at this for 36 years, and feel it is time to get out and enjoy life while I still am able. Military When I was in college I was in ROTC and on the drill team. Our favorite uncle figured I wasn't doing so well in school so decided to draft me.I being an Air Force brat decided that was the way to go so I enlisted.I took my basic at Lackland where half my flight were New Yorkers. We also had a washout from the academy and one from OTS so trying to get out of basic proved interesting to say the least.I was sent to Chanute for AGE school. The orderly room and the big boy's school were the same buildings my father went to school in during WW2.I got stationed at Laughlin,a training base, where you find out what aircraft look like, as a basket case, when one of the students goofs.TDY to McDill for -60 school then to Korat Thailand for a glorious 366 days of fun{?}.Two heat strokes and minuse an appendix I got out alive with no help from the local Communist. They were still trying to kill us even over in a friendly country.Got sent to McConnell and was discharged. One airman couldn't belive an E-5 under four years was getting out.Nam was winding down and I had been with my father during a peace time military so I figured 24 years around the Air Force was enough.
