Robert Hoffman:

CLASS OF 1961
Highland falls, NY

Robert's Story

Where to start? Went into the Army right after HS. Was commissioned as 2nd LT in 1963 and assigned to 5th Inf. Div. at Colorado Springs, CO. Loved the mountains. Had lots of interesting assignments and in 1965 went to rotary wing flight school and became an Army Aviator. Then, Vietnam in March 1966 and flew slicks and gunships. Back to U.S. and fixed wing school and then to Ft. Rucker, AL as an attack helicopter instructor pilot. In July of 1968 I married Ellie Speary. In May of 1969 I went back to Vietnam and commanded the OH-6A training team. Our marriage did not survive this tour. In August, 1970 I resigned my commission and left the Army. I attended Washington State University in Pullman, WA and while doing so was hired as a police officer with Pullman P.D. In 1977 I moved to Tacoma, Washington after being hired by the Pierce County Sheriff's Department. I had 20 years with them, including 6 years a contract deputy to the U.S. Forest Service where I worked in the mountains North of Mt. Rainier National Park near the little town of Greenwater, WA. Got to work on horseback, skis, snowmobiles, and foot. A great assignment. I had married again in 1972 to Kathleen Briney, from Coeur D'Alene, ID and we loved the area. We purchased a house there and still live there. I finished my career with PCSD in 1998 as a Detective Sgt. running a homicide team. I then went to Alaska and flew for four years for Homer Air in Homer, Alaska. This is about 100 miles South of Anchorage at the tip...Expand for more
of the Kenai Peninsula. Great flying. The company was sold in 2001 and I was not happy with the new owners so I left. I was offered a job running a white collar crime task force for the Pierce County Prosecuting Attorney's Office. I did this until November, 2004 when I left to fly for Fed Ex in S. Dakota. Great and challenging flying due to weather. I did this until November, 2005 when I failed a flight physical due to a heart problem called Atrial Fibrillation. Thus ended my flying career after 40 years and about 10,000 hrs. After I stopped flying we did what my wife wanted to do as that was part of the deal. We have been campground hosts at Yellowstone National Park, volunteer at the North American Bear Center (bear.org) in Ely, Minnesota for a month or so every year, and spend time watching wild horses in Teddy Roosevelt National Park, Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Refuge in Wyoming, and the Steen Mountain Wild Horse Refuge in Southeastern Oregon. We have one daughter, Kimberly, who is an initial attack dispatcher for the USFS in SE Tennessee. All in all, it has been a very interesting and fulfilling life. Well, it's 2023 now and I'm still living in the mountains just north of Mt. Rainier, volunteering at the Bear center, watching the wild horses, and fishing whenever possible. Hope all of you "61 are well. I have attached a couple of pictures below. If you are interested in bears go to bear.org. That is the North American Bear Center in Ely, MN where we volunteer in the summer.
