Robert's Story

In 1967 graduation was looming, or so I hoped. I was a poor student who preferred farm work and motorcycles to just about anything. My summers were spent in summer school, repeating English, and working. My path forward was not spectacular nor bright. I remember the friends that I had, not many, and what we thought we would do after graduation. I was made aware that my graduation was questionable, I didn't realize that they expected you to actually attend most days, and immediately headed for the military recruiter. I took the physical and enlisted in the Air Force. ( I was 17 at the time I enlisted and this was the only branch my mom would sign for.) Even though I went in as a weapons specialist, the AF decided that my math grades were not, indicative of someone they wanted handling their weapons. I did complete Algebra 1 and 2, after 2 tries at both classes but the military decided that they needed me more as Medic. In 1969 was transferred to Elmendorf AFB, Alaska. It was during this time period, TET, that air evacuations were coming out of Viet Nam and in some cases would stop over at Elemendorf. It was during this period that I learned quickly that life is not to be taken for granted. There are no guarantees and dedicated myself to making the most of mine. During my tour in Alaska I completed pilot training and planned on moving into some sort of flight industry. My next assignment was at the AF Academy in Colorado Springs, CO. ( Sheeesh! I didn't know that if you saved what you had written so far it would be published...this is a continuation!) It was during this period that I continued my flight training u...Expand for more
nder the GI Bill and started attending night school at the Univ of Colorado in Colorado Springs. Following the completion of the necessary prerequisite courses I applied for an Airman's Education and Commissioning Program. At the same time Tricky Dick decided that we really didn't need to be in Viet Nam and if there was no war there should be a greatly reduced need for pilots, and Medics. I finished my 2nd tour, packed my wife and 2 kids and headed back to Lakeland to finish my degree. As a note, this is not a recommended path to follow to finish college. I graduated from the Univ. of South Florida in Tampa witha BS in Electrical Engineering. ( I did apply to Univ. of FL but based on my high school grades they felt that I wouldn't make it through.) I immediately started work with Martin Marietta, now Lockheed Martin, in Orlando. In '83, I was transferred to Baltimore, MD and continued my employment with them until 2006. During that period I spent most of my years designing, then managing the engineering for the US Navy's Vertical Launch Missile System, patenting the architecture for the latest US Navy missile launching system, getting a divorce, and raising my 2 kids. BTW, raising 2 kids, 1 each boy and girl, from the time they were 13 as a single parent and managing a career is not recommended. My last 2 years were spent managing the Gulf of Suez Search and Rescue Program for Egypt. Following that assignment I joined the Robotic Systems division of General Dynamics and currently am the Director of Maritime Systems. I was an anti-social, rebellious teen ager that, by the grace of God, turned some areas of my life around.
