Robert's Story

I've come a long way since KWHS ...I haven't always made it easy for myself, but it has always been a heck of an adventure! I know I wasn't one of the popular kids back then, my father transferred back to Key West just before my Junior year...I did enjoy the school though...Besides, how can anybody complain about going to high school in the Conch Republic!. Playing handball during lunch, volleyball games at Smathers, tackle football at the field just by the gate at the naval base where I lived ...cruising Duval Street with BTO blaring from the 8track, getting into bars on my fake police ID...even working at Neisners after school. I also reflect on some great teachers we had back then...all in all a pretty good couple of years! Survived University (I'm a Gator)...came close to blowing it a couple of times but finally got my act together! I worked in the mental health field for a number of years including a four-year stint in the USAF. I decided to shift careers, applying my background in Psychology to the business world. I completed an MSc in Organizational Development and started working as an independent consultant before joining a small group of like-minded consultants. I worked in a variety of industries, with many different people and cultures, and have loved going to work almost every day...for that, I feel truly blessed! Spent most of my adult life working in Europe...18 years living in the NE of England, in the wee village of Tynemouth, overlooking the sea. Our small consultancy enabled me to work all over Europe, as well as Russia, South Africa, the Emirates, and Australia! Spent two years (2008-2010) in NYC, working on a short-term contract and living in a great apartment in Long Island City right across the East River from the UN building, and surprisingly loved it...Downsized after a merger just as the economic bubble burst, so headed back to Europe. I moved to Warsaw, Poland for five years made some great friends and t...Expand for more
horoughly enjoyed living there. Difficult language to pick up and as work for Native English speakers started to dry up, a decision had to be made. So I returned to the UK due to those work demands. I ended up in the lovely spa town of Harrogate in North Yorkshire. Travel throughout the UK for work from Exeter to Edinburgh working for Guide Dogs for the Blind UK. Now I've gone full circle and now live in the city of my birth, where my parents met...Edinburgh, Scotland! A beautiful city...maybe I'm finally home! About me as a person...Tried marriage twice, have not been blessed with children...maybe for the best? After two amicable divorces, I began to think maybe I'm not just the settling down type. However, 4 years ago a wonderful Scottish woman came into my life and last year at the age of 65 I married her. My father met his life partner, my mum, here in Edinburgh...it looks like I have met mine in this beautiful city as well! I attempt to ski (snow), golf, play squash, badminton...not a star but I enjoy them...try to keep a decent level of fitness, I've run a number of half-marathons...my waist is still between 32 and 33...so, not bad :-) Love to travel and experience different people and cultures. I've climbed every hill in the Lake District, most of the high mountains of Wales, and 198 of the 282 Munros in Scotland (Hills over 3,000 ft). I love the beauty and magnificence of Mother Nature, although I do appreciate what we mere mortals have created as well. I enjoy walking through cities, towns, and villages in wonder at the various structures we have built throughout our history...OK I know I'm still a bit of a nerd ;-) Anyway, I've recently been diagnosed with LADA Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults. It's basically like Type 1 only it starts later in life. It has changed how I do things but I won't let it stop me from doing them! So if our lives crossed in high school, I would love to hear about you and this thing called life!
