Robert's Story
Life Profile: Robert "Bob" Kirchner
Originally from a farm in Otter Tail County, Bob came to Anoka at the age of eight and started third grade at Washington Elementary and then attended Lincoln Elementary when it was built. He survived the Anoka Junior High School. The nightmares about not being able to find his locker ended about twenty years ago.
His fascination with the big city of Anoka led to Bob's interest in sociology and urban planning. After graduating from Anoka High School, he entered Augsburg College on a partial scholarship and earned a BA Degree in Urban Studies in 1969. He financed his way through college by working at the Anoka Post Office.
After Augsburg, he worked for the Minneapolis Housing and Redevelopment Authority in the Seward Neighborhood for two years. In 1970 he entered the School of Public Affairs (now Humphrey Institute) at the University of Minnesota on a full scholarship from the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. He completed the course work in two years and earned a Master of Public Administration Degree in 1977.
After jobs with the City of Coon Rapids, Metropolitan Airports Commission and the Anoka County Historical Society, he joined the staff of the City of Anoka in 1978.
Bob served as the Assistant City Manager and Community Development Director at the City of Anoka for 35 years until his retirement in 2013. During that time his work experiences ranged from selling cemetery lots (4' x 8') to developing the Anoka Enterprise Industrial Park (300 acres).
